Lo had some minor surgery today and is back home doing well. The incision area was treated with pain medication that should be wearing off now. The nurse suggested alternating motrin and Tylenol every 3 hours and giving the prescribed narcotic as needed. We are trying to figure out what to do overnight - wake every 3 hours for motrin or Tylenol or let him wake if he is in pain and give the stronger stuff? A combination? Does anyone have experience with this? The nurse kind of just told us to do what we think is best. He has been acting like he feels pretty normal so it's hard to tell what would be best. Obviously I don't want him in pain but I also don't want to over medicate.

@skipra: It depends on the surgery, but since motrin lasts 6 hours you could try to give that last and then see how your LO does overnight. I wouldn't worry about waking him, but you'll have to try it and see how it goes. Don't be surprised if he wakes up after sleeping 6-8 hours and if that happens then give the tylenol and the narcotic at that time.
