Okay this so strange but recently my 4yo daughter has been complaining that her hands and feet hurt after baths and after playing in the sprinkler. It seems to be just when the skin is extra pruny. A few times she was actually writhing and crying from it hurting so bad, then when the skin dries, everything is back to normal. We took her to the pediatrician but she basically said I don’t know and call if it gets worse. Any similar experiences?

@turquoisemama: this is a total guess but is her skin dry? When mine is I have a super uncomfortable itching sensation after a hot bath or shower....lasts for ten minutes or so.

@wrkbrk: Thanks for the response! I don’t think so because it happens in cold water too. Like last night she was jumping in the puddles from me watering the garden and her shoes were soaked for like 20 minutes and she started freaking out that her feet hurt. I took her shoes off and her feet were super pruned. And it’s literally only the bottoms. I know what you’re talking about being itchy after a shower though!

Not an exact fit, but my only thought was to explore Raynaud's disease. A friend of mine has it, here's a link that explains why I thought of it.

It's usually associated with a difficulty managing cold temps, but my friend has pain during situations where there is any kind of a temp change.

@Rocker2014: Reynauds makes sense to me. Mine is triggered if I’m swimming and is more likely if I’ve been in the water a while, so the fact that you notice it when she’s extra pruny means she has also been in the water longer. The bath has probably cooled down enough to make her cold, and she’s probably been in the sprinkler long enough that she’s cold. She might not notice she’s cold because she’s having fun playing. Again you don’t really actually have to be that cold—it can be that temp change like from the warm outside air to and air conditioned house, or the warm humid bathroom to her bedroom. I was just walking at linch and it’s sunny and 54 degrees and I had to have my hands in my pockets because I didn’t have gloves. The first time I had a Reynauds “attack” I was about 8 and had been swimming for a long time on a warm summer day.
You can see if her fingers are blanched or splotchy when she gets out of the tub. It’s the most uncomfortable when blood flow is returning. I don’t think there is a definitive test, but it is more common if you have autoimmune issues, which there are many of in my family although I only have Celiac and exhibited with Reynauds 20 years before Celiac.

@Rocker2014: @Becky: Interesting, do they always change color though? Because I haven’t noticed her skin change color, but just being super wrinkled.

My fingers would often hurt when pruny...and still do if they get really pruny. I can't imagine writhing in pain over it, but I'm also not 4. It only hurts when they touch something though. Do hers hurt the whole time or just if she tries to touch something else?
ETA: I think I would describe the feeling similar to when your legs fall asleep - that tingly kind of pain
ETA-again: Actually, as I think more about it, I think it's almost exactly like when a body part falls asleep and could be the same thing happening. Because it feels a little uncomfortable but then when touched/moved the tingles go crazy. I don't have any major illnesses that I know of, but I do have poor circulation I guess because my body parts fall asleep relatively easily.

@JennyPenny: Thanks for responding! Yes she is extremely sensitive so it would make sense that just a strange uncomfortable feeling would make her freak out. I don’t even remember the last time I got really pruny so I think I’ll test it out tonight and try to replicate what what she’s feeling.
