LO is 13 months and boy is she starting to get naughty. I feel like parenting has suddenly become more difficult. Anyone know a good book about parenting toddlers?

@lovelife: The best trick at that age is the art of redirection!

I like Positive Discipline: 0-3. I think it's great for the toddler age!

Subscribing to this.. That time between 1-2 years has always been my least favorite age and I'm dreading it with DS!! I'd love to start reading up now.
@mrbee: I do agree that redirection helps a lot but in some cases I feel discipline is necessary too as they really do understand what they're doing.

@Coco Bee: I totally believed that (and still believe in timeouts for young toddlers), but I've come around over time. Will post more on it later.

@Coco Bee: @mrbee: We didn't start real "discipline" (e.g. timeouts) until almost 2. My understanding (from reading and from discussions with my doctor), is that most children are developmentally unready for "active discipline" until the age of 2. Until then, the recommendation I received was to use "passive discipline" techniques (redirection, distraction, supervision, etc...).

@mrbee: yeah I'd love to hear more about it. The only experience I have with toddlers is from my nannying background. Discipline is hard no matter the age.

@mrbee: we've been doing tons of redirection. I just want to read about how to talk to her instead of just saying no. And how to teach her that climbing on and falling off the couch will hurt..things like that. I don't plan on doing timeouts or anything to really discipline her but want to start learning as she gets older what the right approach for us is.

@lovelife: I thought this book on talking/listening to your kids was amazing... it's completely changed our relationship with Charlie!

@mrbee: This book is next on my "to read" list! I'm so excited to hear more about how you changed your dsicipline approach with Charlie, too!

@lovelife: I am probably pretty crazy, but I let him climb and fall. He's always supervised but he will learn more by doing. I don't let him fall unassisted from the couch but he runs into things and climbs up and down and we let him slip a little before helping. So far no broken anythings and he can climb all over a play structure and on the couches. I also would say we didn't let him on the couches until he could do it himself so he had to know how to get on and off safely.

A friend with a toddler recommended The Happiest Toddler in the Block. She said it really helped her learn to communicate with her LO. My daughter is ten months now, so I will keep following this post! I think I will need it soon...
