I work part-time and don't have benefits through my job.... am I SOL for maternity leave? Just thinking ahead for maybe next year. Any advice?

Are you looking to see if your job will be secure while you are out or the hope of getting paid for leave?
Even as a full time employee covered under FMLA it just saves my job. It does not provide payment for the time I am off. Payment is up to the employer and in my case is whatever leave time I have accrued I can use to be paid.

I would ask you HR to confirm. I know there is an hour amount to qualify for government and some company programs. You should see where you are with that and maybe do some extra hours if you are very close to the edge.
My co-worker worked part time (half time) and got most of the benefits.

Depends on the company. Are you able to earn vacation or sick leave there as a part time employee? If not, then yes, unfortunately I would assume you're probably SOL.

I believe in general you have to work at least 1,250 hours in the 12 months before the leave to qualify, so around 24 hours weekly but not all employers employ enough workers to participate. Your HR should be able to answer this pretty quickly.

Thank you everyone - I'll call HR. I'm assuming I'm SOL on this, but thought I'd see what you all thought

@ktdid23: a friend of mine who works 20 hours/week recently had her second LO. She got 6 weeks under our short term disability plan but then had to come back, whereas if she were 40 hours she could have had 12 weeks, but still only 6 paid partly under the ST disability plan. It sounds like you need more info regarding your disability plan, but I wanted to chime in and let you know it is possible to get some leave.

@ktdid23: I'm part time and no eligible for FMLA. It's a requirement of 1,250 hours/year I believe, and at 20/week I didn't make that.
Some companies will have their own loesve policies you may be able to tap into. Good luck! I hope it works out.

@MamaCate: Thanks for the hopeful news! I did read on my company's HR site that I am eligible for up to 4 months of unpaid leave following birth/adoption, but looks like I'd need a short term disability plan to receive pay. I would need to pay into the plan to receive benefits.... I wonder if it's cost effective?

@Mrs. Pen: Thanks! I'm looking into it now. Looks like I'd be covered for leave, now it's the "getting paid" portion to figure out. But I'm super happy to see I'm covered under their pregnancy/adoption leave policy!

@ktdid23: it would be worth looking at what the plan covers. Ours we didn't pay into , the company provided. We got 2/3rds pay for 6 wks for vaginal or 8 wks for c section birth.

I did not qualify for maternity leave for my second pregnancy (I switched to part-time after my first son was born). I did have PTO however, so I was able to use that for my maternity leave and it worked out great.
