Does anyone pay their bills by credit card? I saw my cable bill gives me the option and I don't think they charge a fee for it (electric company charges a fee). I wouldn't mind getting some cash back rewards for it but is this too good to be true?!

No, I would never pay bills with a credit card. Then you're paying a bill on a bill you're going to have to pay later. It doesn't make sense to me.

@LindsayInNY: Haha I dunno, it just freaks me out to use my credit card in general, and I'd be afraid I'd forget to take it into account when looking at my checking acct and then not have the money that month to pay off my cc! If we were more comfortable financially I don't think it would scare me nearly as much! I love getting cc rewards!

Yes! All my bills that can be auto paid with credit card are set up to do so - cell phone, cable, and electric. Then all my credit cards are set up for auto pay from my checking. Our mortgage and car payments is auto pay too. EVERYTHING is auto pay, it guarantees we never miss a payment.

@mediagirl: We pay our credit cards off in full so it would really just be changing the method/due date of payment. I just want the cash back from it, LOL!

We pay our insurance by CC to get the points. I don't think anything else offers it though. I say do it, why not! Get the points, pay it on time, no problems
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
we do that for cable and netflix. i'm not sure about electric--dh handles that bill. it works for us! we always pay off our balance at the end of the month so it's never a big deal
clementine / 854 posts
Yes, we do this with our cable bill. I'll take every penny in rewards I can get.

@PurplePumps: I've never set my bills up for auto pay with the exception of my student loans. I think I need to start doing it, just so I don't have to get the bill, add it to my calendar (I keep track in a Google calendar), schedule the payment, etc. Instead I can just add it to my calendar and that's it. Removes a step or two, I suppose? I like scheduling our credit cards so I know the balance, that we have money in the correct account for it, etc. The only OCD thing that would bother me about paying with credit card is that it wouldn't show up in my calendar the same way. Might be a small price to pay!

If it checks out, there is nothing wrong with paying a bill with a credit card. Credit used wisely is exactly the way credit cards are meant to be used. If there is no fee for it, you can get rewards for it and you pay your CC on time, I don't see the harm.
squash / 13764 posts
I do it for those that allow it because we get cash back on our credit card...our credit cards are always paid in full, so I don't see the problem with it.

A lot of our bills are auto paid with our cc. We pay it off every month so it makes sense since we love the points. I'm just sad our mortgage couldn't be paid by cc, the points would be amazing! Heh

We pay a lot of our bills on our credit card and pay off our cards each month. We have a lot of reward points by doing so.

@LindsayInNY: We pay our auto insurance and renters insurance by CC. We love getting the points. I had a friend who used to pay her mortgage with CC and then paid that off every month. She said that they used to get giftcards and free flights all of the time because of that.

I wish we could pay our mortgage on CC! Our cable bill is the only bill we can pay via CC without getting charged. We just signed up for a Capital One Venture card about 6 months ago and we already have a ton of money towards a flight. Wish we would've signed up sooner!!

If our credit cards were paid off (working on it!) I might do this. As long as you carry a $0 balance it's a great way to get rewards - only if the bill doesn't have a fee to be paid by CC. We may most of our bills at once so if we had a paid off card to do this, I would pay all of the ones I could on the CC (say it totaled $2k) and put "aside" the $2k (we have 3 checking accounts so we can hold money for certain things, etc) and then when the CC bill hits, pay it with the $2k I had set aside. Then you aren't paying late fees, etc, but you get the CC rewards.
It's risky if you abuse it but if you do it smart, it can work out really well!

I used to, but it's a hassle to remember to update the card on file when you get a new number/ expires. Now, I use auto pay out of my checking account.
As long as you pay your CC bill on time I think using it is fine. I used to love paying my rent with my CC because of the points.

@MaisyMay: I would LOVE if I could pay my mortgage with my CC!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
That would be great! We already set our CC bills to autopay, so it's no different, to me. You autopay with your debit account or with a credit card...one bill comes all at once, versus throughout the month.

@MaisyMay: Never thought about the mortgage! I'm looking now but I don't know if I have that option...

@LindsayInNY: If you do auto pay with CC, they typically send you and email (or you can sign up for email) and they notify you around the same time you would have received a paper bill anyways. Some companys email the balance, and some you have to go online to check. I started doing this after I missed a payment because I never got the bill. My old method was, receive paper bill, schedule payment. I didn't get one for some reason one month, and ended up not paying it, so I decided that method was no good. And I'm not diligent enough to check for it every month.

Since we pay in full, we do all the time. It's actually quite convenient. I do get reminders that they are due but since I set up auto-pay it automatically gets paid monthly. I do take a look if the total amount looks really off. So far, none of them has.

We pay everything we can by credit card and then pay it off. We feel like we are throwing away money when we don't take advantage of the rewards!

We pay our credit card bill in full every month so we autopay quite a few bills with our credit card. My husband is all about the points!
grapefruit / 4671 posts
I do it for everything that I can, which in our case is cable and cellphones. I wish I could do it for electric but we get charged a fee so there is no point.

Absolutely. Gotta get the reward points! As long as you pay off the card you're good!!
bananas / 9357 posts
Yep! We do it on some of our bills. We should probably set up more to pay by cc so we can get the cash back. We pay our cc's balance in full every month. All of our bills are set up on auto-pay. It makes things so much easier. I have some credit cards on auto-pay too. I usually get an email that my statement is in and then another email when payment was received.
bananas / 9229 posts
@PurplePumps: I'm starting to set all my bills up for e-bills so I get them emailed. What I don't like is the auto-payment weeks before the due date. I don't want to pay it when they send the bill! LOL.

I should now that I'm almost paid off all of my other credit cards.
Moving everything over to one card will help when I move back east. I hate having to call the creditors and utilities when I change bank accounts. Also, it will prevent any late payments if I close my bank account and they continue to draw money.
Although, when I get a new card, it might be a PITA.

We do this for the bills that we can, which is everything except our mortgage payment and student loans. I wish we could pay EVERYTHING with our credit card.
We never use a debit card/checks - just pay everything with our credit card, and then pay off the credit card every single month.
Ka-ching....racking up mega points on the stuff we "buy" (as much as electricity, etc count as buying) already. Now if I could just pay my mortgage with a credit card.....

I pay my insurance with cc to get the points. I don't pay any other bills this way and now I'm wondering why. We buy gas on cc too. We pay the bill every payday so we never have a balance.
honeydew / 7091 posts
We pay as much as we can with our CC. I never looked into paying the car and mortgage with CC though... that would give us a TON of cash back!!
When we bought our house we had to do $50K of home improvements (knew that going into it). We were able to put it all on the CC and pay it off every month - Christmas was free that year!
nectarine / 2530 posts
I do the same as @PurplePumps: . Anything that can be paid via credit card is (auto pay), and then the credit card is auto paid every month (in full, we never carry a balance). 1% cashback! I've done it for years this way with no problems.

@LindsayInNY: we pay most of our bills with credit cards then pay the credit card off each month so we get cash back and points

YES!! We charge everything we can on our CC for the cash back. We do pay our balance off every month though so it's not like we're going in to debt for it. We get 2% cash back on all recurring bills charged to our card. That's free money yo! Like @swurlygurl: Chirstmas will be free this year!

I'm trying to figure out how to set this up... My electric company charges a fee to pay by credit card. I don't think I can set it up through my credit card directly so maybe that's not an option here? I think I can do it for cable though... Will have to look into other bills!
