Left my iPhone for the Samsung Galaxy S4. So far I'm liking it but will take some getting used to.
Any tips for a Galaxy newbie?

Nice! That's the phone I'm thinking I'll get when I finally get a smartphone. I hope you like it!

take advantage of the swype feature! That is one thing I love about DH's galaxy.

I am so thinking of doing this and want to hear more as you use it more!

@T-Mom: @Dandelion: my observations so far after using it for a week. This phone is like a Pandora's box. I feel like there is soooo many features to it I have barely tapped into. Settings are a little bit harder to find than the iPhone. With the iPhone everything is very intuitive to find and use; with the S4 it's like a treasure hunt to find it.
Everyone was raving to me about the picture quality and although it is good. I don't find it that much better than the iPhone. I do like it but I'm not sure yet if I like it more than the iPhone.
DH has the Active and he is finding the reception shotty.

@regberadaisy: thanks for the update! It's hard to break up with a phone that you've had for 6 years (in my case)...

I have a few tips but not sure how they'd work on your phone vs. mine. I installed something called nova launcher that lets you really customize your phone display. but that's another pandora's box. but once I figured out how to use it and what I wanted, then it REALLY simplified my phone. You can hide stuff you never use or want to see.
The reason I could never have an iphone is because I need widgets!! So start playing around with those!!

@babyjmama: at this moment in time I still like the iPhone just a tad more. But it could be I had it for so long and know it in and out like @T-mom: mentioned.

@mrs. wagon: what's different between a widget vs app?

@regberadaisy: I'll be expecting updates, my phone is up for an upgrade this fall and can't decide!

Below is my home screen! weather/date/time widget at the top (that also shows the battery) that you can tap on different areas to get to different apps (tapping the time gets you to my alarm, tapping the weather gets you to weather, tapping the date gets you to my news app).. calendar widget to the right, which is scrollable and gets you to the calendar app by tapping... then shortcuts to apps along the bottom. The very bottom is the dock, which has the app tray icon in the middle (to get you to ALL your apps) and my dock is scrollable thanks to nova launcher... I have one other "screen" on my dock with my other most used apps.

Here's my second screen, and the second screen of my dock at the bottom. At the top is the power/wifi/etc bar that should come standard with your phone. Then below I have two widgets for facebook and twitter. (my widgets look like this, gray and rounded corners and translucent, because I have an app called android pro widgets where you can customize the look/feel of them.) Then to the right are more of my most used apps.
haha oops, i attached the wrong photo at first of a sleeping baby Wagon Jr.

@mrs. wagon: ahh brain explosion. Does having all those widgets drain your battery?
Do you know how I can get rid of the stupid "Life Companion" thing on my home screen??
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@regberadaisy: life companion?? I don't know what that is! Installing any kind of launcher like nova launcher should be able to get that off though... my phone had the google search bar and nova launcher has a thing to not display it.

@regberadaisy: I'm not sure about the widgets and battery, but I did reduce the number of widgets and my battery life got a little better.
Something that will always reduce your battery is any app with ads. So most "free" apps will drain your battery by always sending ads to your phone.

I was really close to doing this last month when my iPhone underwent some water damage! But I looked at the S4 in the store and played around with it. I just couldn't switch... Seems like I'd have to have a lot of patience figuring things out, whereas the iPhone is really easy to use. I have also heard that ios7 (coming out this fall, I think) has a lot of features that Android users love, so I'm not switching just yet. Still curious though!

@RegberaDaisy: so are you glad you switched? I'm going to buy my first, yes, my first!, smartphone, and am learning towards the Galaxy. Everyone and their brother seem to have the iPhone, so part of me worries about missing out and regretting not joining the Apple crowd. I need some reassurance that this is a good choice.
