Hi all! So I am ready to introduce peanuts and decided to take the super cautious route of doing so right before a scheduled doctor visit (shots actually, boo). What I am wondering is, what is the normal reaction time if there IS an allergy? I figure if it's something super violent like anaphylactic shock, it's immediate. Right? And he has no known allergies so we're probably fine. But when can I feel like we're in the clear after this little experiment?

It varies depending on the kid. We did the same thing because we already knew Lala was anaphylactic to cashews and pistachios, so we fed her a peanut butter sandwich 30 minutes before the appointment and she did great. We didn't even end up bringing it up.

@Mrs. Jacks: Thanks. I think the immediate life-threatening reaction is what worries me most.... If he gets a rash or GI problems overnight, we can deal with that for sure, but I want to be near the hospital for a little bit at least! I have heard also that some kids have no reaction the first time and then react the second time, but I'm guessing those are not as common. Hopefully.

My LO had a reaction within a few minutes. His lips were swollen with redness around the mouth. It went away within an hour. He also has the same reaction to cow's milk.

I've always heard that the first hour is the most likely window for an allergic reaction. But if I were you I'd listen to Mrs. Jacks before you listen to me : )

My husband has a very severe allergy to peanuts and he starts mild symptoms almost immediately but for him it takes about 30 minutes for it to be clear if it will be a severe reaction. So I would just keep a close eye out for the hour or two following the food test.

DD got a rash immediately and it went away in an hour.

I have a very severe nut allergy and I know the first time my mom figured out I had an allergy I was about 4 years old and it took her about 30 minutes to notice something was wrong with me. Now it's an immediate reaction, but the onset was definitely a lot slower when I was a kid.

Thanks to all the ladies who replied! I feel the need to update you and let you know that I made a DELICIOUS PB&J before we went out the door to the ped's office and my child refused to eat it! He took one little bite. After all that! But I did find some peanut candy in the hospital gift shop and he LOVED that (of course, it's like half sugar and half ground-up peanuts) and no reaction. Of course we will be careful next time too since reactions apparently don't always show up the first time.

I was thinking what you'd do if he didn't eat the sandwich, my son can't handle the stickiness of it yet, but he's licked it off a spoon a couple of times and no reactions so far.
