Right now, I EP. I had planned to meet with an LC to see if we could get LO to latch. Ideally, I'd like to do half and half, 3 feedings from the breast, 3 feedings of fortified expressed BM.
The ped's reluctance in me breast feeding is that we can't see how much he's eating and we can't fortify it. (We fortify it by adding 1tsp of Neosure, a 22 calorie powder formula to every 4oz of BM). I understand where he's coming from but I think doing half and half is a good compromise and I told him my plans to work with the LC to monitor his weight and intake as well as following up with a bottle to "top him off".
He really wasn't into the idea. I don't know what to do. I don't want to hinder LO's growth (he was born at 35w3d and weighed 4lb, 4oz so weight gain is critical) but I'd also like to attempt to breast feed.
I just feel really hurt by his lack of support. I was talking to DH (who was at the appt with me) and he thinks me meeting with an LC isn't a good idea. He wants me to continue EPing for a year. I told him it was a lot of work and I didn't think I'd be able to do it for a year.
He went off on me, saying that it wasn't work, that I just sit there and play on my phone the whole time and talk to my mom and stuff. I tried to explain how it's basically double the work, I spend 30 minutes giving LO a bottle and then I pump for 30 minutes. If I were just breast feeding, I'd feed LO for 30 minutes (although I do realize that in the beginning it could be longer). Multiply that by 6 feeding a day and that's 3 extra hours, not including washing pump parts, mixing bottles, warming bottles, washing bottles, etc.
And not to mention that I just always wanted to breastfeed my baby.
