Does it bug you?
I was trying to work out how to nicely and respectfully ask my MIL not to do this yesterday.... Maybe I'm a little crazy, but, cold and flu and stomach bug season, public transit germs..... Hmmmm.

I think we just had to make a few comments before MIL caught on. I remember my nephew a few years ago as a newborn before I was a mom and she said, oh just let him suck on your finger. Even not as his mother that was gross!

My nephew (6) kept doing this to T. I think it's gross butM was more upset about it. My other nephew poking her in the eye is what got me.

@T.H.O.U.: yes I think I will have to just say something going forward. I always feel bad making comments to her as she raised a lot of kids very well and knows what she is doing.
@youboots: oh yeah, eye poking is probably worse

Oh gross! I would be pissed if someone tried to put their fingers in my baby's mouth, yuck!

What? Who does this? I would remind anyone the baby is at daycare so they will probably get sick if they do that -- a little reverse psychology should work!

Yes, absolutely. I (gently, but firmly) physically redirected any and all hands that were headed towards my baby's mouth, face, or hands. I tried to be diplomatic and say "Please don't touch" instead if I could, but if there wasn't time, oh well. Adults should know better.
I would definitely address it with your MIL, but it might be preferable for it to come through her child. Good luck!

Who over the age of 3 (aka my toddler) does this?! WHat adult thinks that's ok? so bizarre!!

My MIL would do this too when my DD was an infant. I would freak out! I didn't even stick my own washed finger in there. Ugh. It was hard for me to tell MIL not to so I told DH to tell her. She kept doing it anyway for a while, but eventually stopped.

I can't understand why anyone would do this. There was 1 and only 1 occasion when DH was asked by the nurse to do this and it was when she got her first round of immunizations. It still bothers me just thinking about it.

I'll be the odd man out and say that I don't have a huge problem with this as long as it's either me, DH, or my mother. It doesn't happen often if at all but I know we all are super clean and wash our hands all of the time. Sometimes DS2 needs to suck on something and that will soothe him until we can reach a paci.

@MUI831: I do see your point. But he wasn't crying at all, I think what had happened is they put their fingers in his hand and he grabbed their finger and brought it up to his mouth (like three-month-olds do) and they let him chomp on down.
My SIL let him do it too. It's more an issue for me because we will be living with them from next month so I guess I have to address things that bug me or they won't go away.

@travelgirl1: I get you. I wouldn't have a problem with that either. I don't mind if my babies use me as a teether as that's sort of what babies do. Again, only if my hands are clean. But I totally understand your concern, especially around flu season.

Oh no. Not ok. No no no no no no no. Hell no. All the nos.
ETA: I can put my finger in my kid's mouth. But I pity the fool who tries to! Fortunately no one ever did.

Yeah that would definitely bug me! Right after DD was born and we were still in the hospital the pediatrician came to examine her and she put her finger in DDs mouth WITHOUT a glove on! She was testing her suck strength. It totally weirded me out but I was so caught off guard that I didn't say anything. All I did was hope she had washed her hands really well.
Also yesterday I went to get takeout at a sushi place and the cashier pinched DDs nose! WTF people are so weird!

This is so strange, what adult puts their fingers in a baby's mouth? That is unless they are worried she is chewing on something, then i'm all for it prevent my baby from possibly chocking. But otherwise keep your germ infested hands outta my baby's mouth!
