DH and I have been operating out of basically separate bank accounts for our whole relationship. Everything is an open book, we just didn't officially combine anything, although we do have a joint checking and savings if we need to spot each other some spending money or something.

We each pay our respective bills out of our bank accounts, and whatever is leftover, goes to whatever we feel like spending money on.

We are toying with the idea of finally combining everything into one big account, to help get our finances in order and keep each other accountable for frivolous spending. But I'm nervous about so much money going in and out constantly and me never having any idea how much is in there.

Do you balance your checkbook, like the old days? Do you have one account for bills, and another for petty spending? How do you guys have it set up as far as your bank accounts/bills/and expenses go? Are you able to keep track of everything easily?

I already use mint, and am working on keeping a budget for the first time. That probably sounds crazy, but at least we are trying! We never, ever pay any bills late and have made a lot of head way in getting rid of debt, but we are just starting to get really passionate about becoming debt free and taking control of our financial future, instead of passively living not know exactly how much is going where and when, and living paycheck to paycheck despite making a really good income for where we live.
