I did. My water broke, but my contractions wouldn't start on their own. The rule of thumb is the baby needs to be out within 24 hours of water breaking due to infection risks. FWIW, no horror stories here. It did the trick, got 'em going, I had an epidural, and soon I had a baby

back when my mom was giving birth to my oldest brother, pitocin wasn't as widely used. they let her labor for 48 hours after her water broke. her labor never progressed, and at the end of all of that trauma, she ended up with a c-section. my mom was absolutely miserable and sick, and my brother ended up VERY sick. he was in the hospital for two weeks after she was discharged. this is part of the reason i'm not worried about a medicated childbirth -- there are definitely reasons why the doctors do what they do!

I was induced so I had it. My labor was super slow though. Took 16 hrs to go from 4 to 10 cm.

I did. I was induced with pitocin.

I had a good experience and after a 15 hour labor I got to naturally deliver my daughter.

They stuck pitocin in my leg AFTER i gave birth. I clicked no. That might be why the percent is high. I otherwise had a med-free birth.

yup i was induced (due to medical reasons) i was terrified that the contractions were gonna be awful without the epidural they were intense but nothing like ive heard women describe them as, def not as bad as i feared. when my epidural was given, i couldnt even feel my contractions it was awesome.

Went into labor. Ended up getting pitocin after 12 hours of being in labor and water being broken. Of course, we later found that we probably could have broken the other sack of water instead of pitocin. I had a vaginal birth with no pain medication and I think that is because they never got a good heartbeat from him. So they didn't know if he was in distress.

If I do it over again, I wouldn't do pitocin personally.

My labor started moving a bit slow around 6-7 cm and then I got and epidural and my contractions stopped. The Dr. wanted to give me pitocin right away but I asked for a bit of time and the contractions started again but the Dr. was acting very antsy so I ended up getting a bit of pitocin. I was already about 8-1/2 cm when I received it, my water had broken about 10 hours before, so I'm not sure exactly what the rush was but less than 2 hours later I had a baby.

@cvbee: @lydg: Pitocin can be given via IV, or as an intramuscular injection (IM)... one's leg is a common place for it.

I also had a shot of it in my leg AFTER a med-free birth because:

1) I had no IV in place (no time because I arrived at the hospital at 9.5 cm and I pushed the baby soon after)
2) to control postpartum hemorrhage (I was gushing a lot and my BP went down to the 80s/40s, meaning I was losing a lot of blood after the baby was born)

Re: that statistic in the original post, does it say that 81% receive it during labor for the purposes of induction? Or for other purposes (such as postpartum hemorrhage control/prophylaxis) as well?

With my first baby, I was not induced with pitocin. I was not induced at all actually. But I did receive it after birth to increase uterine contractions/prevent postpartum hemorrhage. I wonder how many women who contributed to the statistic also answered yes, but got it for reasons other than induction.

With my second, as I mentioned, I got it to control signs of actual postpartum hemorrhage.

Yep. I had the same situation as @Mrs. Yoyo: My water broke but my body didn't go into labor, despite them giving me 24 hours to see if it would. (That's UK policy, not US)

I was induced with a high dosage of pitocin because every time they stopped it, my contractions stopped. My epi never worked so I labored med-free, which was not fun. Once things got going, I went from 2cm to 10cm in 3 hours. I did need a forceps delivery, but that was unrelated to the pit.

I was induced with pitocin after 12 hours of cervidil. I was also given pitocin after birth. I really hope to avoid it next time though.

I did the first time because I was induced. The second time I didn't have time to get any medication. Labour was so quick.

@cvbee: yup I think it is pretty standard to get it afterwards as prophylaxis for too much bleeding. Most doctors give it... It's routine.

A lot of moms also don't realize it when they get it in the IV because they think they are just getting IV fluids and are so busy with the baby.

I was given pitocin but only after labor to help my uterus contract post birth.
