I ended up watching hgtv almost all day in the background on my leave, now I wish I had a list of shows to watch!
My go-to favorites that are easy to watch half-awake and still follow the timeline:
Modern family, happy endings, arrested development, HIMYM, big bang theory, the office UK, friends, seinfeld.

@Running Elley: @Mrs. Wagon Haha I'm so glad you said that. My husband just bought this network hookup for our tv so we can watch anything on our home media storage on our tv in the bedroom. He doesn't mind the tv in the bedroom being on when he's sleeping, so I'll have something other than infomercials to watch at 3am!

@winniebee: The Killing is GREAT but I'm not sure how how easy it would be to watch and follow if you can't sit and watch the entire thing. So much goes on, you really need to focus on it. But it's totally worth it! Very good show.
For lighthearted middle of the night stuff - I'd add Curb Your Enthusiam (depends on your style of humor though), Community, How I Met Your Mother, 30 Rock, and don't forget older sitcoms if you have Netflix. I like to watch Cheers now when I can't sleep
