My LO is very hard to change, he is constantly flipping over. I've tried distracting him with a toothbrush, cell phone, remote, etc. Nothing seems to be working... please help, I dread diaper changes

It is SO hard!!! I feel like I'm going to hurt her sometimes when she practically twists her body in half trying to get away from me. I zerbert her belly if it's bare, give her toys and let her play with the elusive cell phone to try and keep her calm. Some days these things work. Other days....nothing works. I think it's a phase. A long phase....(hopefully)?

I feel ya My lo is so difficult to change. I just try to distract her as much as possible - singing, iPhone (when all else fails this usually works), tv, remote, keys, etc.
Sometimes I change her standing up.

Do you buckle him down? I had to buckler her down (tightly) a few times and now I just threaten it before she stops.

@T.H.O.U.: I hadn't thought of buckling him down. He is going to love that... LOL... oh well, he's crying anyway, might as well make my life easier

@T.H.O.U.: @littlek: i buckled mine up and she crawled away with the pad attached to her back.
TV is the only thing that works for us!

@Freckles: I'm lol-ing out loud right now
My LO is almost six months old and like a wee tornado on the change mat, I've given up on the changing table and just have the mat on the floor so she can't roll over and hurt herself!

Have you tried mooing? It captivates Olive when I moo... also, beatboxing.

My friend recommended this upper body restraint: http://hulabye.com/
She said it helps , especially with big poops.

@Myicitygirl: interesting! i'm seriously considering this... i just wonder if lo would mind it. he doesn't like any kind of restraints, unless it's in the car or ergo, because he knows he's going somewhere. but those babies look so happy!

@mrbee: @Freckles: thanks for the laughs tonight. I'm laughing so hard I'm crying!

We change her on the bathroom counter so we usually turn on the faucet and she' captivated by the running water. Other tricks include: small hand mirror, toothbrush, rotating special toy she only gets during changes, singing, blowing on her face.

I change him on the floor so I just smoosh him between my legs so he has nowhere to roll!

@mrbee: DH totally beat boxes too! It totally works. I'll get him to try mooing next time!!

@Penny Lane: Olive beatboxes back to me, so I know she loves it too!!

@nikol: my friend said her 10 month old doesn't really like it and will fight getting into it, but that once they get her in, she stops struggling. I am thinking about trying it too

@Freckles: @mrbee: haha...we need videos of both!!!
Singing "Old McDonald" and "Wheels on the Bus" help. I also make sure to sit him on the change table and let him pick a toy first BEFORE laying him down to avoid the crying fits.

Gonna try the beatboxing and mooing because I've used up all my game. I hate diaper changes for all the reasons you stated.

I think it would be easier to wrestle an alligator than change my 9 month old's diaper.

@mrbee: The mooing was a fail... he looked at me like i was nuts and then flipped over.... I'll try the beatboxing...

@littlek: How many times did you moo? You can't just moo once and go for the change... it has to be like a herd of cows mooing, one after the other (at least, that's what's required to distract Olive).
Also, I use a throat moo... along these lines (although mine is not as good):

My DS will calm down to "if you're happy and you know it" about 50% of the time. We also started stand up diapering and he does much better, it's just messy...

@T-Mom: I've tried that and the wheels on the bus song too... It used to work but I think he's bored of my rendition of happy and you know it and wheels on the bus...
