We recently lost our Canon Ixus camera. Luckily, there weren't any photos on the card because I'd emptied it a couple of days before. Now DH really wants to get me a new camera for Christmas so I'm turning to the hive: what do you know about (compact) cameras, which brands are good/better, what features should I look for? I know nothing about photography, so I guess I'm looking for a camera that takes really nice pictures without having to drag a DSLR around!

Sony NEX! All the convenience of a P&S with picture quality and perks of a DSLR. They're great cameras and you could probably find an NEW 6/7 for pretty reasonably priced.

Honestly I feel like the quality of phone pictures are just as good as a point and shoot! Might be worth doing a comparison

@hotchildinthecity: I have a Samsung galaxy s3 mini and although the camera on it isn't great we are looking for a separate camera so that both of us can use it. (Dh doesn't have or want a smartphone) But you make a valid point!
