Both of my LOs are allergic to peanuts (among a big list of other food allergies). LO1 had a reaction when I first gave him a bite after he turned 1. He had redness around his mouth and started itching. I gave him some Benadryl, and he improved. We were already scheduled to get blood work done for other suspected allergies and also tested for nuts. The test came back positive, and we have avoided peanuts ever since.

Keep in mind that you cannot predict an allergic reaction. Each reaction can differ, and there's no telling if the next time will be better or worse. 7 months after his first reaction to peanuts, he went into anaphylactic shock after ingesting peanuts. Luckily we had an epi-pen on us and we were able to figure out the signs quickly. He has had one more reaction, which also resulted in the use of an epi-pen and a scary visit to the hospital.

I don't think he will outgrow this allergy anytime soon. We do visit the allergist regularly and get blood work done once a year to evaluate where he stands with his food allergies. His numbers for peanuts have gone down, so there is hope. Those numbers can go up or down, and his reaction to peanuts may be totally different the next time he ingests it.

From my experience, I would recommend seeing an allergist. They will most likely do a skin prick test in addition to blood work. It's important to diagnose and have access to an epi-pen in case of anaphylaxis. It's best to be prepared in all cases.
