I have 1 pair, a cheap-y pair from Walmart I think. I hate it! it starts just below my bra line, and they are like shorts then if that makes sense, 1 piece. The shorts rolled up and then caused an ugly line, and the top part under my bra kept on rolling down!

I have the kind that are like shorts also; they're a Nordstrom brand and are several years old. I really like them! The top hits at my natural waist and the bottom of the legs stops around the top 1/3 of the thigh. They've got rubbery stuff on the inside of the leg and waist holes so they don't move at all. They even fit over my baby bump so my butt still looks nice in fitted dresses! 
I don't know what the brand is, but if you have a Nordstrom near you I recommend the lingerie department--they'll bring you shapewear to try on until you find the right one!

My favorite is Spanx "Higher Power" panties. Helps with the mommy muffin top! I hate these cheesy names..

I have the Target brand of Spanx, 'Assets', in the shorts like you describe. They come up just above my natural waist and not quite half way down my thigh. They aren't super duper slimming like some, but they are more comfortable and they generally stay put. I've bought other ones in TJ Maxx and the like and had a hard time with them-- rolling down or up, too tight, very uncomfortable. I've literally taken them off at weddings and smushed them in my purse. The Assets ones aren't bad though.

I have several cheap ones from Walmart and some Spanx. I like the ones from Walmart better. I have some of the high briefs, and some of the shorts and like both pairs equally. The high briefs seem so hold me more in though.

I like my spanx but assets are a much better price. I got a heavy duty body suit from amazon and it feels like 500 million rubber bands are on my stomach when I wear it.

Another vote for the cheap version of Spanx, Assets, from Target! I think they make a noticeable difference but are comfortable enough to wear to work.

I've tried Spanx but didn't really get it, perhaps I had the wrong size but I thought the result was minimal, I could barely tell a difference compared to no shape wear. And I'm not skinny, definitely have a few extra pounds round the middle.
Do you think shape wear actually works or is it all in the mind? If it works, how tight does it need to be?

I like spanx and a brand called yummie tummie. They make these camisole looking shirts that look like regular camisoles but have a panel of shape wear material around the waist to smooth and cinch! Its like losing 5lbs magically. They are perfect for layering under cardigans or sweaters. You do kind of have to wrestle yourself into and out of them though. They are pretty tight!

@London Mama: I always get super tight. It might not be comfortable but I feel more comfortable being smooth and tinier. I like to squeeze in my psycho love handles!

@JessLC: Lol this reminds me of the shapewear I wore for my wedding. It was so freaking tight and only buttoned in the back and I didnt want anyone helping me so everytime I put it on I had boobs in the back and had to jump and spin to pull it around. Fun!
