@sloaneandpuffy: What kind of accidents is he having, and how old is his sister?

And have there been any recent stressors in his life? Starting school, traveling, moving, new sibling, etc..

We just had a regression about a month ago, when we moved into our new house. DD has been potty trained for over a year and a half (!) and this was her first regression, so it was a big deal for us. I did a lot of reserach online, and these are the things that helped us the most:

1. Acknowledge the problem. I simply told DD, "I've noticed you've been having a lot of accidents lately." She agreed that there had been a lot of accidents, but she didn't really know why it was going on.
2. Acknowledge any changes/differences and identify the issue. For us, I knew she was regressing due to the move, but you might have to do a little digging. If your LO is very sensitive, it could be something as simple as an object being out of place in his room. If nothing seems to have changed he might just not have been entirely ready for potty training the first time around and might pick up interest again in a couple months. Also, consider whether it might be a medical issue. We had DD tested for a UTI during her regression, but it came back negative. Sometimes kids regress, though, when they're sick or it hurts to pee.
3. Verbalize the issue and reassure the child that everything is ok (if you can uncover the cause).
4. Treat every accident without any emotion. I would say to DD, "Oh, I see you peed on the floor. Let's do that on the potty next time. Come put on some dry pants." That was the total conversation about the accidents.
5. Celebrate each catch. If you used incentives to potty train the first time, you might try doing that again. And go overboard with praise every time hey go on the potty. It's just like starting potty training over again, in this regard.
6. Only consider going back to diapers/pull-ups if it is a long-lasting regression. DD's lasted about a week, and I did put her back in pull-ups one day, but that was a mistake. I realized that night that I should have kept encouraging her instead of feeding her regression, so we took the pull-up off and went back to big girl underwear. If her regression had lasted a few weeks or a month, I would have considered putting her back inot pull-ups, but it didn't last that long for us.

@sloaneandpuffy: I made the same mistake at first. I think it's much better to stay away from furthering the regression, though. Hopefully your DS's regression won't last that long and you'll be back to normal within a week or so!

@purrpletulips: DD was almost 3 when she regressed. Now that she's coming up on 4, though, i have noticed that she tries to hold it until the very last minute, and we've had some near misses lately. I think, at this age, she is getting more involved in playing/activities and she doesn't want to stop to go potty. So i have to remind her a lot to go right away, listen to her body, etc... Do you think that might be happening with your LO, too?
