DS is 2.5 and this weekend is our 2nd attempt at training. I'd be fine with waiting until he showed more interest but he has to be trained before he starts preschool in a few weeks. He's doing much better this time around! We've had 2 poop accidents today but no pee accidents yet

Potty training has definitely been one of the more challenging parentimg experiences for us.

I'm reading the Oh Crap potty training book and I think we'll start over Labor Day weekend. I'm not sure what daycare's typical process is with potty training... I think most kids wear pull ups so I'm going to have to figure out a good plan with his teachers. There are 10 kids to 1 teacher so expecting her to catch his signals isn't realistic.

I think I may try hard core over Labor Day weekend. DS1 has no interest. I know that physically he is capable. He just doesn't want to. He'll be 3 in September and I know people say boys are slower.

We started potty training last week. My DS is 2. I read the Oh Crap book, and spent about 3 days on block one with him.

Right now, we're on block two, I guess. He goes on the potty without much prompting when we are at home. Our biggest struggle is he has trouble pulling his pants down (or pushing them down, as she says in the book). I let him go without pants at home a lot because of this, which I know I need to stop because he already just wants to be pants-free all the time now!

Ugh. The one crappy (pun intended?) side of having my Mom watch DS is that she has almost no interest in helping to potty train him. She seemed so inconvenienced that he showed up in underwear this morning. She's more worried about her rugs/hardwoods than she is about him going on the potty I probably should have planned to take a few days off this week, I guess I'll just have to see how it goes at her house today.

How does it work at daycare? Do the providers just put the kids who are potty training on the potty at regular intervals?

@Smurfette: Wow, every 1-2 hours? We have him sit every 30 min, lol. He could probably go longer but we haven't tested that yet. My mom watches my niece (8) and nephew (4) also so it's not really feasible for her to watch him at our house. I think it was just a lot for her to process on a Monday morning so I'm hopeful that she'll get on board once she has some coffee

Potty training is no joke, though! I can't wait to be on the other side of this hurdle!

@Smurfette: I can't either i really want to, to give him the extra day, but I did talk to daycare today and they were super on board!

Do you plan to do nap/nighttime diapers?

@Applesandbananas: We're definitely still doing diapers for naps and overnight. He wakes up with a huge diaper in the morning so I think it's going to take a while for him to be night trained. That's a whole other beast that I'm not ready to tackle yet!

@travelgirl1: poop in underwear is nasty.

@Smurfette: @petunia354: I'm so tempted to go full throttle and get rid of all diapers. I don't know when we'd tackle nap and nighttime if we don't do it all at once. I think it'd be confusing to my LO to go back and forth, just based on his personality.

@Applesandbananas: well her diaper is still full overnight. I know myself I had bed wetting issues till 5 or so. I just have a small bladder. So we will just see if she starts being dry in the morning. I don't want her waking up 30 mins into a nap cause either cause she wouldn't go back to sleep.

@Smurfette: I did too, which is why I'm thinking of tackling it all at once, after what I read in the Oh Crap book, but I'm nervous to go all out!

@Applesandbananas: We tackled day training and nap training just kind of fell into place a few days later. And night training just happened about 3 weeks after we day trained! The book said that many kids consolidate their pees and my friends have said their kids just fell into naturally holding their pee at night, so we decided to wait and see, and if that wasn't the case for E, night train over the Christmas holiday. We keep the little potty in her room at night and we notice she plays in her bed for about an hour before she actually sleeps, but she will get up and use her potty chair, then go to bed. So Dh will dump it before he goes to bed. And in the morning, she must get up before us, because there's always pee in it. I actually really like this set up b/c it eliminates the "Mommy i have to pee!" followed by an hour or two of toddler play time because she got to see us. And i'm usually trapped nursing the baby at 6am when she starts to rouse. There *is* a developmental aspect to it, but the idea of doing both at the same time overwhelmed me, so i figured we'd just wait and see how it panned out

@petunia354: Yeah, they take her regularly. There is a restroom in her classroom with a child-sized potty so that keeps things easy.

@travelgirl1: yes! Sometimes she wants to sit all the way back, against the toilet (we don't use a little one) and it sprays everywhere.

@Applesandbananas: We did OCPT and I had the same concern. On Day 1, we made playdoh, built a bulldozer out of a big cardboard box, and made muffins. We also played regular games around the house and spent a lot of time outside. I found it most helpful to have a small travel potty that was always in the same room as him.

By Day 2, I was too exhausted to plan anything special. We laid low and did take a short trip around the block to walk the dog.

I had such cabin fever by the 3rd day but surprisingly, LO loved it. He was happy as a clam to be playing with trains and doing puzzles with me all day long.

Oh, we also invited friends over for playdates. He could run around pantless with his friends in our house, and that helped occupy an hour or two each day.

Good luck! We started 3 weeks ago and still have good days and bad days (today was a bad day ). It's starting to feel like an endless process!
