We're right in the of Sandy, although they don't know exactly where it will hit. During hurricane Irene, thousands of people around us lost their homes and some town were nearly completely destroyed. We only lost a few trees luckily. For this storm, I now have a 6 week old baby and I'm a nervous wreck. We live in the northeast and we really need heat at this point because nights are very cool. Losing power means no heat for us. We also lose water when the power goes out because we have well water. Any tips on preparing for the storm? We cloth diaper but I think I'm going to go buy some disposables. Without water, we'll run out of diapers really fast...

I'm thinking about this too. Use disposables. If I hadn't had them during the Derecho, we would have been out of luck. Buy bottled water. If it gets cool wear layers and put a hat on your LO. Make sure you have enough non-perishable foods for a few days. Make sure you have all of the essentials for LO in your medicine cabinet.
I've been through tons of hurricanes. Most are no big deal, but some are devastating. Prepare as much as you reasonably can, but at the end of the day, it is what it is.

Do you have anywhere that you could go? When a hurricane was heading our way (I'm in Florida so we get our fair share of hurricanes too) we thought about just heading out if it was supposed to hit us. Usually we would just deal with it.... but like you said with a baby it's a different story.
If not, just stalk up on the usually water, batteries, gas, canned food, fill the bathtub with water, etc. I think disposables are a great idea.

We had a bad ice storm one winter in St Louis and the power went out. FIL had a small generator, just enough to run the heat. If you guys have the money, that might be something to look into.

I would invest in a generator; if there are any left on the shelves. Make sure you know your Red Cross emergency evacuation centers in case you need to leave your house. Park your car in an area that's likely to be safe from falling tree limbs/power cables/etc.
Lots of water, batteries, maybe extra bottles and premade formula if you ff, make sure to charge up your electronic devices so you'll have those ready if the power goes out. I know some people fill a bathtub with water so they can have that if the water goes out.

Last time we were in the path of a hurricane we were without power for two weeks. I can't imagine having to deal with that while having an infant! I second getting a generator if you can. You'll need some heat. I'd get water, non perishable food, diapers, wipes, formula (even if you EBF in case stress effects your supply), and maybe some more warm clothes for the baby since you won't be able to do laundry.

Ditto on the generator. Do you know anyone with a gas or wood burning fireplace? When we got hit with a huge storm a few years back many people were without power for days to weeks. We immediately trudged over to my ILs because they have a gas fireplace.
Pack an emergency bag and leave in your car. Make sure it has water, food(granola etc), ready to fed formula, warm blankets, socks, gloves, warm clothes for LO. Make sure your tank is full and if you have one of those gas cans fill that too.
Flashlights with fresh batteries, candles with matches etc. during short power outages we've lit candles for extra warmth.GL!!!

Gas in the car, batteries, and water! Generator is great if you have the means but not always available. If you are nursing, be extra careful about your supply. Bring and have batteries for your pump. I had to evacuate during hurricane Ike when LO was 3 weeks old. My supply majorly took a hit. Good luck!

Stock up -- gas, water, food, blankets, any supplies you need for baby. Maybe some formula just in case. Also, find out where a local emergency shelter will be located, in case you need to go there with baby for the heat.

Yeah, I'd stock up on diapers, water, food. I'd start filling containers with water and just stashing them. Anything you need to survive for a week or more. Do you have frozen milk in a freezer? If so, I'd go and buy a bunch of bags of ice and just put them in the freezer. Even if you lost power, that would keep a closed freezer cold for a good while.
In terms of warmth, you should be ok if you really bundle. Do you have extra warm jammies for your baby? How about a really warm sleep sack? Worst terrible case (assuming it wasn't safe to drive elsewhere), you could bundle your baby up, and then just hold her in a blanket while she slept.

I'm having to consider this too. So far I've just planned to get disposables, I'm not worried about flooding where I am, but I am concerned about losing power. I'm hoping that if we lose it my IL's won't and we can go there.
