I'm currently prepping my cloth diapers, and I want to make sure I'm doing it right. I know natural fibers like organic cotton and hemp need a lot of prepping (I've heard 6-10 hot washes), but man-made fabrics only need to be washed once, right? What about blends?

Dunno about blends but I boiled my prefolds if you have any of those, it was way quicker.

I just erred on the safe side, and washed everything on hot six times or so. What kind of diapers are you using?

Cotton needs 3-5 washes. A little bit of detergent on the first load, but just water with the rest. Dry on hot after every wash. Everything else I followed manufacturers recs. I know BG synthetics only need one wash, but they still recommend 3-5 for their organics.

@Mrs. Chalk: I have a variety. GroVia AIO's (which are either cotton or cotton/hemp blend), BG AIO's (which are blends of cotton and synthetics), and Lil'Joey's (which are synthetic).

I followed the mfg's recommendations (I have BG Elementals and Freetimes, 5-7 washes).

I just boiled everything "natural" and washed synthetics once.

I washed my BG Elementals 5-6 times and my BG Freetimes only once!

I boil everything "natural" that doesn't have any snaps (so inserts only basically), the natural fibres need to be wash prepped separately from the synthetics (so the grovias need to be washed separately from the BG's until they are done being prepped). I use detergent with every wash (based on the recommendation of an experienced CD user) and you should dry between every wash cycle.

Question - after the initial wash to get rid of the majority of the oils the natural fabrics contain, is it okay to wash the naturals and synthetics for the rest of the prep washes?
