If you are expecting a Montessori education, from what I know of that style/approach, yes I would be very upset.

I think that's a bit extreme to comment on the coloring. I think he did a great job!

Interesting. My son is also three and in a Montessori school. I've never seen anything remotely like this, and it seems quite drastic, I think my biggest concern would be to find out if your son was admonished in any way for not completing it?

How did he feel about it?

I've noticed that my youngest (2 1/2) doesn't really react to feedback on her homework just yet. She's just in her own world...

I would be pissed! He did such a nice coloring job, too. If the teacher so badly wanted to correct a 3 year old's art project, why didn't they just send a note home or something? (Which would be equally ridiculous, but at least it's not ruining his work!).

Are these activities counting towards grades for his college application? That is beyond ri-donk! At 3 years old, they are still bouncing from wall to wall.

It's silly, but I have one vivid memory from kindergarden (besides the bean and rice bins, I loved those!)- I had to color an elephant, and the teacher made a comment that it should be gray and not brown. 1) all the gray crayons were taken. 2) We had just watched a nature show at home with the elephants taking mud baths. Even 25 years later I'm annoyed by that. Scarred for life

PS- teacher's penmanship could use some work

I don't have a three year old and I have no experience with children this age on which to base my opinion but..... WOW! I'm furious for your little one. That just seems outrageous to me. I just showed DH and he's on the same page as me - we would want to discuss it with the preschool teacher. It just feels wrong to hold a 3 year old to account for "not finishing" something - surely it's meant to be about learning through fun, not neatly completing a project.

Montessori or not, I would be upset that my child was being critiqued in such a way at such a young age.

I think it's going a bit overboard and I would definitely ask about it nicely. There's nothing wrong with asking for clarification on a situation. You may not have the whole story even though the action seemed a bit extreme for a 3 year old's work.

Completely inappropriate and I would be pissed. LO goes to an "academically focused" center and they would NEVER do something like this - the learning is in putting the cube together and deciding how many to color, talking about the colors and numbers. It's not about being "perfect" in the end; the learning is in the process, not just in the final product.

I agree with everyone else, I would be extremely upset. C is only 15 months so I don't have preschool experience yet, but I can't even fathom how I would handle this. Montessori or not, this is not how I hope my child to be taught. Plus it seems like a passive aggressive attempt at communication with you and your husband. Ridiculous.

@mamimami: if this was a frequent thing, I would not send another child there, and I'd let them know why.
