I had my progesterone checked on Day 23 of my cycle. It was 14.21 ng/ml. I haven't been able to talk to anyone at my OBGYN's office yet. So, I'm wondering if anyone know is this is a good or bad number? Thank you!

I think that's a good number but it depends what units you are using. Pretty sure that confirms O

@CatchAFallingStar: I am pretty sure that most doctors like to see it over 10 for an unmedicated cycle but they each seem to have a preference for what the number should be. Do you know what cycle day you ovulated?

My doctor was happy with a result over 10.
Edit: this was an unmedicated cycle..

@mrswin: I ovulated I day 14 and took Clomid 50mg, days 3-7..
nectarine / 2433 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: Ok....the Clomid changes my answer then. For medicated my doctor wanted it over 20 or 25, I'm not sure how quickly it would start to drop after peaking at 7DPO.
Are you being monitored with blood work or ultrasound while taking Clomid?
nectarine / 2809 posts
@mrswin: Yeah, that's what I thought. Hmm. I wonder if that means I'm not ovulating. No, I haven't been monitored at all, unfortunately.

@CatchAFallingStar: oh i forgot you were on clomid. I think that is on the low side for medicated but you still ovulated. im not on clomid though so have no experience of next steps. Hopefully your doctor will have a plan for you.

@CatchAFallingStar: I'd call your dr. My dr is very good bout returning calls same day.
nectarine / 2433 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: I would get I touch with your doctor since most RE don't like to do more than 3 cycles with Clomid. I'm not a fan of doctor who prescribe without monitoring because they are playing with your hormones without following along with what is happening. Are you able to get a referral to an RE?
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: have you taken a HPT? My guess is you should be around 12 DPO by now...
nectarine / 2809 posts
@Snowdrop: My doctor said it's perfect. I guess I should believe him instead of Google? I never know. Technology makes things so complicated!
nectarine / 2809 posts
@mrswin: My doctor sent in a prescription for Femara, so I'll be trying that next cycle. But, I don't know if it's still bad to be on a medication for more than 3 cycles. I feel like my OBGYN is clueless. He didn't even know what an AMH test was. I'm trying to get into an RE, but there's only one in my city and he's very booked. Plus, I have to give them $600 on my first visit, even though I have insurance. So, I've been kind of putting that off a little.
nectarine / 2809 posts
@littlek: No. I don't take them anymore. Too upsetting. I'd rather just wait for spotting or AF. Still heartbreaking, but just easier somehow.

@CatchAFallingStar: Dr google doesn't always get it right . Very glad you got positive news.
I think we have the same attitude towards HPTs...
nectarine / 2809 posts
@Snowdrop: Yeah, I just can't handle them anymore. I think I know my body well enough now to just know when things are different. I'm hopeful right now, but I'm also leery of feeling that way because the disappointment is so hard.
nectarine / 2433 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: I mean this in the most respectful way so please understand that I hate to see anyone struggle and I wouldn't wish this struggle on anyone.
The fact that he has never heard of an AMH test (at least read about it) would concern me and at the end of the day he is a OBGYN and not an RE but if he is going to prescribe meds he should at least understand the testing. Have you had CD3 testing done? Has your DH had a SA (sperm analysis)?
I would not continue to take fertility medications without being monitored. You should be having regular blood work and ultrasounds so that they can monitor how your body is responding. Without monitoring you could become hyper stimulated and you would have no idea risking high order multiples or cysts, etc.
nectarine / 2809 posts
@mrswin: I completely agree. Yes, I've had my FSH tested. It was 8.5. Husband's sperm analysis was great, no problems. We're working on getting into the local RE. Thank you so much for your concern!!
nectarine / 2809 posts
@mrswin: Also, I ovulate regularly on my own, so Clomid was being used to produce more/better eggs.
honeydew / 7916 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: Did they test anything else on CD3? It's typical to test your progesterone and estrogen at that point. I'm wondering if someone at the RE's office gave you bad information about paying the $600 for the consult if you have insurance, because it's generally one or the other. If you really do have to pay upfront it may be possible to get reimbursed. Or does your insurance just cover anything related to infertility?
nectarine / 2809 posts
@spaniellove: Just FSH was tested, nothing else. I'm not sure about the $600. I'll be calling them later today. Thank you!!
nectarine / 2809 posts
@spaniellove: My insurance covers up to $3,000 per year. (not much)
honeydew / 7916 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: Hmm. How far do you live from the next closest RE?
nectarine / 2809 posts
@spaniellove: Well, I haven't done much research on it. I'm sure there are some great ones in Portland (OR).. that's 2 hours from me.
nectarine / 2809 posts
@spaniellove: I've read that FSH testing isn't even valid without an estrogen test. Do you know if that's true?
honeydew / 7916 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: Would you be willing to drive the 2 hours for a consult? $600 sounds like around double what a consult should cost and I'm concerned about a doctor who'd take advantage of having no competition. About the FSH, I don't know if it's a requirement to have the E2 (estrogen) in conjunction but I've never heard of not having your CD3 E2 levels. If your OB hasn't measured that, you definitely need to see someone else and please consider not taking any more meds with this doctor...
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: Just curious.. what was your progesterone level before you went on clomid?
nectarine / 2809 posts
@littlek: I don't know. This was the first time it was checked.
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: I'm surprised your doctor would put you on clomid without checking first... before my Dr. decided if I needed clomid we did the CD3 and CD21 test.. How did he know you needed clomid?
honeydew / 7916 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: It was frustrating when my first clinic turned out not to be the right one for me. I hated the idea of having to go through everything involved with switching and finding someone new and starting over, but it turned out to be the best thing I could have done.
pear / 1846 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: it must be so frustrating to deal with doctors like this, and I can't even imagine having to deal with those kinds of costs (we pay through taxes in England) but I think you are doing the right thing by not taking meds till you see someone. I only saw a GP and so far, before starting anything I am having/have had. Day 3 fsh, lh, E, Prolactin. Day 21 progesterone and TSH. An SA for DH, an ultra sound and repeat bloods. Yes I find all this frustrating but if I had been put straight on clomid, likelihood is wouldn't have worked be because of the prolactin. I'm hoping so much for good results from you soon
nectarine / 2809 posts
@littlek: He didn't know. He just said "let's try Clomid".. really for no reason other than the fact that I hadn't been pregnant yet.
nectarine / 2809 posts
@littlek: @Snowdrop: @spaniellove: Nothing to do with his medical expertise, but both times I saw this OBGYN, he said both f**k and s**t. I have a foul mouth sometimes, but not in a professional setting. That kind of made me feel awkward. Seemed too casual.
nectarine / 2809 posts
@littlek: @Snowdrop: @spaniellove: yay! Just talked to the RE's office and I only have to pay a $30 co-pay!!
nectarine / 2809 posts
@spaniellove: Excited! I go in on 1/28. My husband thinks it's too soon to see a specialist, but I disagree! He thinks we should just "try harder." UGH
pear / 1846 posts
@CatchAFallingStar: that is not professional! Excellent news on the RE. I don't think it is too early at all. You know your body. Oh dear they just don't get it sometimes do they? I think I'd have asked him how exactly we were meant to try harder, probably using your ob's favourite four letter words!
