I just saw this. It looks like its because babies still fell out and cracked their skull even if they were in the seat on the floor. This is why we had to get rid of ours. By the time my LO was old enough to sit up in the bumbo, she was big enough to push herself backwards out of the bumbo. So we always had to be sitting right there with her on the floor. It kinda defeated the purpose. If we were sitting right there with her, we would just hold her.

I knew this would happen. We never really used the bumbo, but my sister still uses it for my niece who's 19 months. no bueno.

@Mrs. Sunglasses: i agree. whenever my LO used it, he seemed to be always falling out of it.

LO used the Bumbo every day from when she was 4 months and we never had issues.

So, what do people use other than the bumbo? Ours is still in its original packaging. I wonder if we can exchange it.

@mediagirl: they are offeirng a repair kit to add a lap belt to it. It can be ordered at http://www.recall.bumbousa.com/
Truthfully, you dont NEED a bumbo, or any chair for that matter. We had one for liv and used it like twice. It always made her puke.
Also FWIW my best friends mom is an infant developmental therapist and told me to not use it. It doesnt force them to use stabilizing core muscles to learn to sit so it could potentially slow their ability to sit on their own. Clearly I kept ours, it just wasnt a fit for us

@mediagirl: we have a bebe pod. Didn't use it much though

I didn't think I'd ever want to buy an infant chair but my LO absolutely loves the sitting position! I was thinking about buying the Bebepod by Prince Lionheart, it comes with a safety belt and the thigh holes are supposed to be larger.

But if the Bumbo is now half price, I'd get that instead (I sound horrible, I know).

we have the bumbo, we received a used one as a gift. we never leave our baby in it unattended, I always sit in front of her incase she falls. i will request the "Repair kit" that comes with a restraint belt, that way we can continue to use it.

@mediagirl: we have the bebe pod. We used it a little on the floor but we used it a ton strapped to a chair at the kitchen table so LO can hang out with us during meals. Now that she is on solids, we feed her in the bebe pod and it has inspired us to just get abooster seat instead of a full highchair. Get the one with the tray if you do optfor it.

We are have both (bumbo was a hand me down, we bought bebepod because wagon jr's thighs couldn't fit in the bumbo) and we used the bebepod every day. Love the lap belt, tray and especially the toy!

My LO couldn't fall out of it.... her legs were too chubby. She couldn't get out if we pulled her.

I use the Bumbo on a carpeted surface when LO is under supervision and I haven't had any issues. I will request the repair kit as a precautionary measure!
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@artbee: I don't think the issue is falling out of it, our problem was that LO would arch her back and push out of a sitting position and flop over backwards onto the back of her head.

I had heard about all the accidents from raised surfaces, I have never put LO on the counter... ok once I did but I was standing there holding the seat..
I put him on our carpeted floor.
That is really unfortunate I like the idea of the bumbo!

I think this recall is pretty much identical to the one before. It's from parents leaving their kids on raised surfaces unattended.
You can't fix stupid.

boo. I am getting a used bumbo this weekend. I guess it is better than I hear this now rather than when it is too late. I'll still try it out, but will not trust it.....not sure if I'll bother with the recall safety strap thingy.

@zippylef: The article says that some of the babies fell from the seats while they were being used on the floor--but yes, perhaps their parents weren't watching at the time.
LO's thighs are too chunky for the Bumbo anyway. We've tried to use it twice and it's hard to get her in and out of it and she doesn't like it so we were just going to sell it. We'll probably just trash it now.
ETA: My husband says they should call it the "Bumpo."

@zippylef: Exactly, can't fix stupid. Basically, don't leave your LO alone! Gosh!

the article says they "have learned of at least 50 incidents in which babies fell from Bumbo seats while they were being used on raised surfaces. CPSC says another 34 babies fell from the seats while they were being used on the floor or at an unknown elevation."
so, most accidents were from raised surfaces, which we already know is a no-no. then 34 were either on the floor or an "unknown elevation." i wonder how many of those 34 were actually on the floor. maybe i'm cynical, but i feel like those that claimed an "unknown elevation" probably had it on a raised surface but didn't want to admit it. i can't imagine that falling backwards on a carpet would crack a baby's skull.
i think i'll still register for one and try it out for myself.

We used our hand-me down bumbo with the optional as a highchair for many months and never had a problem. However, like many on here said we never left DD unattended in it.

Never had an issue with falling out but I can see how they could, especially super active babies. Both of my boys have chubby enough thighs that I can't seem to get them out of it when I pick them up!

@photojane: Good point--I know of plenty of babies who have fallen from standing (while learning to walk), hit their heads, and didn't even cry no less crack their skulls....

@erwoo: haha my little guy has chunkster thighs too! It's kind funny when you try to lift them out and the seat is still attached!
pomegranate / 3053 posts
@enjollah: I know! I just let the Bumbo fall to the floor eventually or I step on it to release it.
