My friend went down the slide with their 18month old and somehow her leg got stuck. She has two fractures and has a cast from mid thigh to ankle for the next couple weeks. 
poor girl.
The ER doctor told them that it is the leading cause of injuries they see.

oh no! i think mr. bee posted about this before on the blog a while ago. i don't think people realize how dangerous it is & assume they're safer together than LO alone. hope LO heals up quick!

I've seen this before-- on here, and I think it was on NY Times. Since then I've seen parents going down the slide with their toddlers and I'm not sure if I should say something. I don't, because for the most part, I think things are none of my business, but not if it's a safety risk...

Yes not safe... I have gotten a friction burn going down with my LOs too.. Thankfully no broken bones we don't do It any more..

I totally understand why it's dangerous (though hadn't really thought about it before now)...but I'm surprised that would be the leading cause of injury in an ER!?

Yep, I read this on Oh Apostrophe's blog! My MIL went down the slide with her step-grandson last year & dislocated his hip. I let F go on his own now.

I read about this on the blog and totally freaked on DH when I saw LO getting trapped once. I explained and he totally got it. We send her down alone (us standing on the side)

I do this all the time! The twisty slides are slow and the others I guess I've just always tucked lo's legs in. Interesting...

That's crazy! I'm glad I read this because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have thought twice about going down the slide with LO once he gets to that age.

Ouch! Yeah, I've heard of this and it makes me super cautious if we do the slide together. Like, I hold her legs and arms out so they can't get caught.

@mediagirl: I was the same. DD was too nervous at first to go down alone so I made DH hold her legs together on top of his. He though I was being neurotic until I showed him a few links online. Luckily she slides by herslef now.

@IRunForFun: @Smurfette: the article in the blog post says it accounted for 14% of pediatric leg fractures - which is still pretty significant! I'm glad for the heads-up and I told DH too.

Oh wow, I would never think about this being dangerous but it makes sense. I can totally see DH riding on the slides in the future with LO and our nephews. Thanks for posting!

@delight: I think it depends on the child's comfort levels. My LO was going down baby slides with us kind of holding onto her from the side to help support her at about 10 months. Now at 15 months she seems comfortable going down the big slides by herself with no one touching her.

I've heard this, so I'm super paranoid to go down with her. I always make sure her legs are tucked in so they can't get caught.
