Help! My five year old is AWFUL about putting on any shoes that don’t open up super wide (like Velcro sneakers or Mary Janes). She just can’t figure out how to point/wiggle her feet and be helpful when putting on boots, jazz shoes, etc. - it’s nearly impossible; she’ll literally curl her toes under and let her foot bend in half. Any tips on how to cue her/ teach her what to do?!

Totally out of left field....and doesnt help with self sufficiency.....but
Could she practice pointing her toes by lying on her back and pointing them to try to stretch her body long-like?
I'm thinking the way kids sit on the floor to put on shoes is kinda scrunched like, maybe shes just carrying that motion
So maybe short term if she can do this, you put her shoes on while lying down....then she will develop muscle memory to point when she does it?

@meadow: Thank you! I'm totally not opposed to doing it for her; this positioning might do the trick. I was trying to brace her back against me so she had something to push against, and it just wasn't working. I've seen people do some funny things with tipping kids back into the trunk in their carseats (so their feet are in the air like a roller coaster, haha), so I may experiment with that , too

@PinkElephant: My DD finds it easier to put boots and tight shoes on while she is standing. It seems to keep her foot in a better position. For most boots she can do it without help but for some shoes she uses a shoe horn with a long handle to keep the back of the shoe in position. (DH often has to use the same tool because of a back injury so she has always seen it in use.)

@catgirl: Thank you! A shoe horn has crossed my mind; I'll need to look and see if we have one. Even if I'm the one who uses it, I think maybe it would guide her foot on the right path/help her keep it in the right shape.
