What are some good puzzles for 2-3 year olds? We have the Melissa and Doug ones that are pretty simple, shapes, animals, alphabet etc but LO can put them together in just a few seconds. I haven't found anything that's the next step up that doesn't seem too difficult. Is there such a thing that's a little more challenging but around 12 pieces and pretty durable?

@Bao: There are Melissa and Doug sets of 4 12 piece puzzles that come in nice sturdy wooden boxes. They sound like the perfect next step for you. Our LO is now almost 3 and has moved on to bigger m&d puzzles.

@MamaCate: yes! Exactly something like that. I haven't found anything like that in stores though, any idea where? Our Target only has the easier ones. I guess I could order online, too!

My mom just got a Thomas one with giant wood puzzle pieces (40). I think she got it at Walmart. It looks like the brand is Cardinal. He just turned 3 and loves it and can do it independently.

@Bao: I haven't seen them in a store around here and our target has the same things yours does. We got ours at Amazon but my mil found a set at Walgreens I think.

We recently moved to a Mrlissa & Doug igsaw puzzle from the chunky & peg puzzles. It has 9 (?) animals on it so it helps her piece the puzzle together. She's almost two though so an older kid can probably visualize much better. She's had the puzzle for about a week and she still needs help fitting pieces together even if she knows where they go.

Look for melissa and Doug floor puzzles. They have some big ones with large pieces. My friends daughter loves them. Similar to this:

She finds them at Ross, TJ Maxx ... Places like that. My son has this alphabet one and it's pretty cute:
