If you have bar stools to use at your kitchen counter - would (or do) you let your toddler/preschooler use them? I'm a little leery about them because they are taller and we have tile floor - I'm just concerned that my 2 1/2 year old will fall while climbing up. Am I being overprotective?

We have bar height chairs at our island. We got them when our LO was just two, and she's been using them for 8 months now. She has managed to fall through the back of the chair being squirmy, but she only did it once
We have hardwood floors.

we also have barstool height seating and we have the ikea stools with the back rest. it is over tile and carpet. I started letting LO use them when he was about 20 months old or so. he has fallen off a few times (sometimes as he is climbing on or off, other times literally flipping the chair straight back) -- it was kinda scary every time he fell, but he survived and was mostly shocked when he fell, but not hurt, ever. he's around 29 months now and never falls off anymore. he's also very tall and is good with his motor skills.
if it was all tile I would be more apprehensive, too!

I've actually been thinking about selling or storing our counter stools (backless) now that LO is starting to want to climb. She falls off her own toddler chairs, so I'm nervous about the tall stools. She's almost 19 months and I'm nowhere near ready for her to use them.

We have bar stools and tile floors and so far LO has only fallen off once! Miss A loves sitting up and drawing at the bench or watching me in the kitchen.

We have them but for some reasonlo has shown. O interest in them! They also turn/rotate so I especially wouldn't want him using them.

I say let them try to climb and succeed.
If they fall they learn what to do the next time. Once they successfully get in the seat on their own use those chair boosters to strap them in. Practice chair sitting on shorter chairs so they know full bum needs to be on the seat and where their feet should dangle.

We use a booster seat in his stool (ours have backs on them). We don't let lo climb into them on his own, but we don't intend to get rid of them. All of the chairs in our house are that height (our dining table too) so he will just have to learn how to use them safely and we will have to be more mindful about watching him.

We have bar stools and a tile floor and they rotate - My kids started using them around 2.5 and we would help them get up in them.
Both kids have fallen but weren't seriously hurt

We have barstools with backs on them at our island and we don't let LO (22 mos) sit in them or have anything to do with them. We worry about her pulling one over onto her (they're not solid wood, they're the seagrass ones with backs from PB but they are surprisingly heavy), so we don't let her climb. And it seems really tall for her to sit in bc that would be a long drop onto our hardwood floors and I think she'd get really hurt. We have an eat-in kitchen table that she has a booster seat to eat at, so we just stick with that for her....

We have bar stools at our kitchen island. Sometimes our almost 3 year old tries to climb and sit in them but we don't want him too. He's very adventurous but accident prone as well. I just see it as a disaster!

We have counter height stools and have chairs that have backs on them and swivel. Hard to describe but we have a huge island that also doubles as our kitchen table. DS currently sits in the Inglesina fast chair that clips on. He's almost 2. We tried to have a booster chair on the stool but he started to push off with his feet and the chair would lean back. So that was the end of that. My friend's daughter comes over and has no problem sitting in the chair and she's almost 3. I figure we'll get him started trying to get in and out of the chair on his own, safely, sometime in the next year.

We have bar stools and LO has been using them since about 26 months. She can climb on/off them on her own, and we just make sure we don't push her seat in all the way (so that she doesn't press her feet against the island and fall back). It's all about what you're comfortable with.

ETA: ours are counter height, not bar height. that would be a much farther fall! the chairs are half over the carpet, as well, which helps.

We don't let our LO use ours even though he is 3.5. We never eat at the bar though, only the table.
