Question for those with large babies...

My daughter was 10lbs8oz and 22in at birth and was 21lbs and 29in at 4/5 months old (she has since stalled growing and has not grown or gained any weight). I feel like my friends with smaller babies hit these milestones SO much sooner than she did. I have a friend with a tiny 6 month old who is already WALKING. C isn't even really crawling yet (just army crawling). Another friend had a large baby girl and she was very slow to hit gross motor milestones also.

Do you find that your baby is slower to hit gross motor milestones? Do you think their size is a contributing factor?

I was just curious about the correlation.

Our LO has always been on the bigger side and never did those things quite as quick as others. Still within the range of normal, though. Didn't roll for awhile, didn't crawl till 8 mos? Didn't really walk until close to 14 mos. He did sit up a little before schedule, though.

size is definitely a factor when babies are big. that said, olive is a peanut and is still behind in her physical milestones! your lo weighed more at 4 months than olive does now at 14 months!

@zippylef: I think all babies hit milestones at different times, no matter their size. My nephew is a teeny thing and he just started walking at 14 months! It really depends on the child, imo, not the size.

Mine is 6 months, was born at 7lbs 3oz and is not crawling yet - she's doing the beached whale thing, though.

Personally I don't think C is behind for not crawling yet. Six months is REALLY early to crawl. I have a little peanut (17 lbs at 9 mos) and he didn't crawl until 8 months, though he was scooting/caterpillar crawling for a month prior. He also didnt sit-up until 8 months. Whereas C has been sitting since 6 months!!

@pastemoo has had experience with this since G is so big, he is still having trouble rolling at almost 7 months I think and I know it can be hard on her.

I think in some ways it can be an issue but not necessarily always. I've actually always seen C as very advanced IMO!

@mediagirl: I agree with this.

My LO is 5 months, probably closing in on 27 inches and 17.5 lbs. She's sometimes army crawling backward.

Also, my nephew was bigger too and it took him forever to crawl but he was walking at a year and cruising well before that.

I do think size plays a bit of an issue...strength to weight ratio plays a big factor...especially when you're just learning how to use your body!

My LO was smaller at birth (6lbs 9oz) but doubled his birthweight at 10 weeks and is triple his birthweight now. He sat up a little earlier but didn't sit up on his own and crawl until 8.5 months. He totally skipped army crawling. I didn't think he would ever crawl but it just magically happened one day and now he's fast!

Yes, and yes. Every baby has their own timeline, but I feel like his size has contributed to when milestones happen for us. Cam was born small, but has caught right up and surpassed some friends' babies in size, but not physical milestones.

Rolling over, sitting, and crawling I felt were delayed a bit compared with smaller babies (but all within averages), and I'm sure actual walking will be too, but he is cruising the furniture at 11.5 months and 22 something pounds. That all said, he is very advanced verbally, so I think they all have skills they are stronger with than others.

Walking at 6 months?! Wow!! I'm new to baby stuff, but that just seems early in general!!

I had a friend who's baby was chunkier than your average chunky baby and she struggled with rolling from tummy/back and vice versa. She also arm crawled, and never really crawled, crawled. She started walking just fine just before her 1st birthday!

I think some of it depends on proportion too. According to a NatGeo documentary I saw, part of the walking equation is their ability to balance the weight of their head? Like babies are born with the reflexes to walk (I definitely saw this in my kids!), but because their head is too heavy, they lose the reflex, and have to relearn when their body has caught up in size and strength.

My son was avg weight at birth and hits his milestones pretty normally. My daughter was tiny and is about a month behind him in many things, even though they are the same weight now. My ILs think our boy will walk early, but he's lean with a big noggin, so I'm not so sure.

I actually had a family member tell me that "DD probably wouldn't roll until she LOST weight because she's so chubby". UGH!

At our 6 month appt, P was about 19lbs and 28 inches. Our ped said then that she would likely take a bit longer to crawl because she's so big. She had been sitting since 5 months but that was very early. Now at almost 8 months (7.5 really), she is not even close. She can get up on her arms pretty high, and just started getting on her knees but only for a second.

@Mrs. Pen: C is 8.5 months old. She started sitting at 5 months. I know she's not behind on crawling but she was pretty behind on rolling. I was just curious if others had noticed this rather than concerned. I do think she'll be crawling, probably in the next couple weeks.

@bpcmarj: Actually, that sounds a lot like C. She started sitting unassisted at 5 months but didn't start rolling until after she was 6 months. She's 8.5 months now and army crawls.

I would disagree. My LO was 9.8 pounds and grew quickly. She was rolling over pretty much right away back to belly and by 4 months all over the place. By 6 months she was sitting and on hands and knees. She walked around 10.5 months and was running all over steadily by her first birthday.
