Hey Everyone,
I have a question. I just had my review with my boss, and although 2012 was a really rough year for me personally (which in turn affected my job productivity), I got a really nice raise. 9% to be exact. I instantly felt kind of bad because in about 3 weeks I'll be telling them I'm pregnant.
Has anyone else gotten a raise right before they went on mat leave? Did you feel bad?
I kind of feel like I should have told them before... eep. Why do I feel guilty??

You shouldn't feel bad! You earned your nice raise, and separately, you will have some good news to share in a few weeks.
Are you planning to go back after your maternity leave? That's the only thing I'm slightly worrying about, since they are restructuring things soon and I feel bad that whatever role I end up in will only be for 6 months, but whatever.

Wowza! We only get 2% raises, no matter what...9% sounds great! I wouldn't feel bad--you earned it and that has nothing to do with your pregnancy or maternity leave. Just keep working hard and doing your job and there's no shame.

@Foodnerd81: I guess part of me feels bad because I really didn't deserve it based on my performance in 2012. However, based on previous years (I've been here for 7 years), I do deserve it.
I definitely am planning on coming back, we cannot afford for me not to work. At least not at this point in our lives. haha
I see how you could feel bad, but I guess you really can't choose when you get pregnant and when a company decides to restructure and/or give raises.

I wouldn't feel bad at all. They wouldn't have given it to you if they didn't you think you earned it last year. Be glad that you got 9%. All we ever get it 3%. Don't feel bad, especially since you are planning on coming back to work.

Don't feel bad. They obviously value you as an employee - and probably haven't been able to give as great of a raise that you deserved in the past few years. You earned it! Congratulations!

Thanks ladies. I feel better knowing that I will be coming back to work. We normally don't get 9% raises and I was told not to expect this all the time (haha i wish!) but it just seemed like bad timing for them to decide to give me a larger than usual raise. I guess I really shouldn't complain because the extra money while on maternity leave will help a lot!

I did. I felt guilty too. It was literally the next day that I told them I was pregs. But the raise is presumably based on the hard work you've already done and what your current skill set is so your pregnancy shouldn't affect that. Congrats on the nice raise! Don't feel guilty, you deserve it!

@.Twist.: Yes. Almost the exact same thing. It was literally one month before I went on maternity leave (and 9%, too). I didn't feel (too) guilty. I worked hard for it! Enjoy it! And congrats!

Dude you deserve the raise. It's based on past performance, not how you are GOING to be performing.
My yearly raise (and bonus) is coming through about 2 weeks before I go on maternity leave. I earned it, period, and I will not feel guilty for getting paid more money for doing my job well, pregnant or not

Don't sell yourself short and don't think you didn't deserve it! That's a great raise and you are obviously worth what the company is paying you. I wouldn't worry at all about the timing with your maternity leave.
I work in a small office and ended up having to tell about my pg before my year end review. While I was nervous about this, everything went fine and it did not effect my raise and bonus. You just can't plan the timing with this stuff.

Take it and enjoy it. No profitable company gives money away that isn't earned. Plus, you will qualify for more money on Mat leave

haha you ladies are making me feel much better.
I have a crazy guilty conscious that I'm sure can only be blamed on my mother! 
I guess I feel like they're just giving me the raise only to be taking a year long holiday! haha. oh well, as a few of you have mentioned, you really cannot plan these things!

For the record, I've never ever had a guy tell me that he felt bad that his raise was too big! But I've heard a lot of similar concerns from women!

Don't feel bad!! You deserved the raise! A couple days/weeks here and there of unproductivity isn't unusual!
