(I'm aware that this is rather silly. Bear with me.) So... I'm short. I can't reach the mattress of most cribs with more than my fingertips. Which makes me certain I won't be able to pick up my baby safely. We have a crib picked out already, and it has standard sides. Anyone else have this problem? Do I just set up some steps so I can reach in?

Can you get a crib with a drop side so you can put it down to reach baby?

Do you have or can you get one of those one-step ladders to help you reach over the crib?

I am also short. We bought regular cribs and I a getting a 3 step, step ladder. Drop sudra would be nice but you can't buy th a note because they may not be safe. I hoped kids are all so I don't need the last mattress placement until they can stand up. But we'll see what happens .

For now, we just put the mattress on the highest setting and got a mini crib. I'm 5'0, and it seems like I should be able to reach LO fine--I'll get back to you in a few weeks.

I remember mrsdaredevil saying she bought a certain crib because she was short & it was the lowest to the ground to reach in. I don't remember which one it was, but you could probably find it in one of her posts.
If you were going to put a step I'd probably put something really wide so you are stable standing on it & leaning over. Maybe even one of those steps you use in step aerobics! It would be wide to stand on & you could adjust the height, maybe even be able to push it under the crib when you're not using it.

I am not even short and I had a stool in the beginning because DD would be asleep in my arms and I would have to ever so gently place her down without waking her up! The stool was necessary so don't feel silly.

I have a friend who just spent a couple of hundred dollars extra for a shorter crib. She's pretty short, and this is baby #2 for her so she knows how hard it is to pick up the baby. But your way with a step stool seems a lot cheaper.

Thanks, all! We just started moving into our new place today, and I SO need a step stool to operate in that kitchen - reaching the middle shelf is like reaching the top one in our apartment. In response to this, I told my husband about the crib thing - he didn't stop laughing for a few minutes. It's nice I'm not the only one who finds cribs weirdly tall.

It's not irrational! I had the same fear. We have a drop side crib (I know they're banned, but it was free) and put the mattress on the highest setting. It's still a reach so I would have preferred a step stool.

Totally go for the step stool! Toddlers need so many step stools anyways, so it will go to good use down the road.

I'm 5'0" and have a crib that's pretty low so I can reach LO really easily...it's still on the highest setting and LO is 6 months.

I'd be tempted to just saw a few inches off of the legs, but that's just me.

I was worried about that. Most cribs have multiple heights. Make sure there is one that is a higher height. By the time they need to be low, they will be sitting or standing and not needing you to lean as much (I couldn't reach him if he was sleeping). Or, skip the crib, super babyproofing the room and had them sleep on a mattress on the floor.
