I just finished The American Heiress. It was so good!! I'm looking for the next "can't put it down" book. What do you suggest?

@mediagirl: I haven't read a ton lately, but I'm currently reading the book of the month book, so far so good!

I'm currently reading The Book Thief and I'm really enjoying it. In fact if I didn't have to go back to work I would be finishing it now.

@MrsTal: I was about to recommend the same book - my absolute favourite! He also has another one called I am the Messenger which is worth reading - soo good
@mediagirl: Have you read Q&A? Or Life of Pi? Both really good!
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@MrsTal: I want to read that one sometime, glad to hear it is good!
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@bunnymommy: I have read Life of Pi, it's on my Kindle and one I have read a couple of times. Haven't heard of Q&A...

@mediagirl: It's what the movie Slumdog Millionaire is based on - it's really good! (muuuch better than the movie). Also the Kite Runner is really good (but sad), and so is The Help, Atonement, White Oleander, Phantom...um, lots more. I'll have to raid my bookshelf and see what else hehe
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@bunnymommy: sweet, keep up the suggestions! I loved The Help, Kite Runner and Atonement. I love books about the WW2 time period and mysteries based in current time.

I just read The Fault in Our Stars. A beautiful book but very sad. Quick read.
pomelo / 5509 posts
@mediagirl: I also looove books about the WW2 time period! I'm reading a non-fiction one called In The Garden of Beasts right now, but I have a lot on my bookshelf. When I get home I will take a look and come back with some recommendations.
honeydew / 7504 posts
@MrsTal: @bunnymommy: The Book Thief is one of my favorites, too! Did you know they're making it into a movie? I'm anxious to see how that's going to work!
@MrsKoala: I just finished The Fault in Our Stars, and agree - quick read, sad, but good.
I just TORE through the first 2 books in the Divergent series, and am anxiously awaiting the release of the 3rd (like, it's saved in my phone calendar, ha ha). Hunger-Games-esque. And I'm now reading Reconstructing Amelia, which is good - kind of a suicide/murder mystery complete with high school drama!

@littlebug: whaaaat? I actually kind of hate it when they turn books into movies - Im always so disappointed! Part of what I love so much about the BT is how it was written so I also wonder how they'll do it!
@mediagirl: I feel like I shouldnt have started commenting on this thread cos I'm not sure how to stop haha. But here are a few more - Before I go to sleep, Room, The end of Mr Y, Dry (not really in your genres but still really good!)
cantaloupe / 6869 posts
@littlebug: Want to hear something funny? Just before I read The Fault In Our Stars, I also tore through both of the divergent books and wanted to cry when I found out that the third one wouldn't be out until the end of October!

@mediagirl: Have you ever read Those who save us? It is a WWII novel that I really enjoyed. Also, I'm currently reading Power of One, which is WWII but in S Africa so a different perspective. Finally, since you mentioned WWII and mysteries, I'd also recommend The Redbreast by Jo Nesbo. It's a Norwegian police procedural that involves a WWII backstory. I'm obsessed with Scandinavian police procedurals though, don't know if it'll be your thing. Oh, it's WWI not II, but In Pale Battalions is another good one. sort of a WWI mystery.
@IRunForFun: Really enjoyed In the Garden of Beasts!

@Pirouette: The Power of One is great... Excellent movie, too. And I think I read Those Who Save Us and really enjoyed it.
@mediagirl: The author of The Kite Runner recently put out a new book, And The Mountains Echoed. It was also very good. His writing is so beautiful.

@MrsTal: Love that book!!! I couldn't put it down either.

@MrsKoala: I haven't read the book but parts of the movie was filmed behind my parents house!
One of my favorite books is Wonderful Tonight by Pattie Boyd. It's a really great book. I've read it several times!
pomelo / 5509 posts
@Pirouette: Oh I have Those Who Save Us waiting for me on my bookshelf! I got it at a garage sale for 50 cents!

Since you liked Atonement, have you tried one of his new books - Sweet Tooth. I found it to be a really fun book
pomegranate / 3331 posts
@littlebug: I totally want to watch the movie when i finish the book! (morgan freeman is in it, right? love him!) I've only just started the book but i have a feeling I'm going to tear through it.
@IRunForFun: Read it! i read it a few years ago, but it was the kind of book i read super fast but then thought about for a little while after. Which makes me think i should re-read it. Might have to add it to the "maternity leave reading list!"

Oh, please read Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein- it's another WWII book and it was my favorite read of last year (and I read a lot!)
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
Holy cow. You're all so awesome! Looks like Those who save us, the power of one and the fault in our stars are going to the top of my library list. I actually wrote down all of the suggestions, I'm so excited for new books!
@Ms.Badger: it's on my list! Thank you!
@Lozza: will do. I will have to list my favorite ww2 books for everyone!
@bunnymommy: haha I love your excitement for reading!!
@DigAPony: such a funny book! I didn't realize it was a big hit, I thought my mom had just found it when she was out visiting my brother in Seattle.
@IRunForFun: nice! Thank you!

Some of my favorites:
The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult. I don't normally read her stuff but this was haunting and so well written.
Maine.
Girl in Translation.
Unbroken. A WWII novel.
Elizabeth Street.
The Kitchen house.
The art of racing in the rain.
Also, I just realized the new show orange is the new black is based on the book!

Code Name Verity was really good. I second that one. I just read Silver Star and really liked it as well...

@mediagirl: yeah, it got really popular this summer because it came out in paperback! So good.

I LOVE threads like this!!! I immediately go to my Amazon app and start adding books to my Kindle wish list. I used to hate finishing books as it's always so hard to decide what to read next, but thanks to a few of these threads, I now have loads of recommendations to choose from!
I'm reading A Dangerous Fortune by Ken Follett right now and am completely hooked. I am a huge Follett fan though and loved every thing I've read by him so far (Pillars of the Earth, World Without End, and Fall of Giants).
pomegranate / 3414 posts
Right now reading Micheal Vey: Battle of the Ampere and listening to the audiobook of Catching Fire (Hunger Games #2).
cantaloupe / 6869 posts
@Ree723: I really need to start reading Follett's books. I got hooked on the miniseries for Pillars of the Earth and I wished I had discovered the books before the series! Especially since I love historical fiction!

I started "102 Minutes: The Untold Story of the Fight to Survive Inside the Twin Towers" last night. It obviously isn't a light read, but it has really sucked me in. It includes a ton of detail about the buildings and how they really weren't up to code and there was no plan for how to get all of the people out of the buildings. It's been very eye opening so far.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@Sophia: ooh that sounds good! Another good 9/11 book was The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@purrpletulips: yes! Before the movie comes out, I have to re-read book 2!!
pear / 1837 posts
@MrsTal: @mrsbookworm: Did y'all know that the companion book, Rose Under Fire, came out on Sept. 19? I haven't read it yet but friends who have say that it's great, albeit very different from Verity.
I've seen Elizabeth Wein speak twice at book signings, and the amount of meticulous research that goes into these books is dumbfounding.

I've been loving Lisa Gardner lately. I read Gone and The Perfect Husband. I'm currently reading Hide. They're super suspenseful.
