We are one of the few people I know that still iron. My DH wears button down shirts, and insists on ironing, even the no wrinkle ones. Since we have a toddler and I'm dealing with major pregnancy sickness, I've been out of commission for 2 days. I'm looking for ways to make our lives easier. I tried a hand held steamer, and it did nothing. Any other alternatives to ironing?

Dry clean the shirts -- the come back nice and pressed and hung on hangers. If DH figures out a way to wrinkle them he can iron them himself!

Either he can iron them himself or you can send them out.

Ha ha. He does iron them, but he's picking up the other chores, so I was trying to find a solution. Sending them out would also cost extra money that we are trying to save.

@Pumpkin Pie: Since it's likely a short-term thing, I would be okay with spending a little extra on sending the shirts out and maybe cutting back somewhere else if you can. It seems like freshly ironed shirts are important to him.
ETA: I am eternally grateful that my DH does not wear shirts that have to be ironed.

@Pumpkin Pie: ah I see. There's a wrinkle spray you can spray on shirts and then pull them. That may work?

My DH wears only non-iron shirts to work, and just pops them in the dryer on the wrinkle release setting for 20-30 minutes right before he gets dressed in the morning. Is that what you were already doing with them? Otherwise, I would probably just tell him he can spend 20 minutes ironing all of his shirts for the week in one shot while watching the NBA or something.

This is terrible, but when we were in hotel without an iron, DH hung his suit shirt in the shower stall, pointed the showerhead down so it didn't get on the shirt, and turned the water on hot while he was getting ready. Worked like a charm.

My mil removes button down shirts from the dryer while they're still semi-damp and then she hangs them and pulls the wrinkles out as they dry. It's not perfect but she hates ironing and hasn't done it in years. She doesn't use wrinkle release spray but it seems like something to try!

We got a garment steamer before I did away with ironing altogether - like the kind with the water tank, stand, and steam wand. It was like $50 from Conair.

I use a garment steamer too but it won't produce the same results on a shirt that an iron does. I use the steamer on things like knits. The iron is the only thing that gets shirts really crisp though.

@Pumpkin Pie: Yeah its not going to be like ironed shirts where you get a crisp edge, but if you're looking at things like wrinkle releasers, then the garment steamer is going to work better than that. Its definitely faster in terms of just getting the wrinkles out than spraying or ironing. We originally bought it for our wedding so that our wedding party and family could easily press their nice clothes and after that we just used it for all of DH's pants and shirts. Until I swapped them out for wrinkle-free everything.
And if you're interested, LL Bean's no-iron shirts are legit iron free and look crisp at all times. The fabric is a little heavier, so probably not the best for super hot summers or anything, but they always look perfect straight out of DH's suitcase. We pair them with Haggar slacks/khakis that are wrinkle-free and they always look crisp too.

I just put wrinkled clothes back in the drier along with a wet washcloth. It basically steams* the wrinkles out.

@gingerbebe: My husband swears by the LL Bean shirts. We send his regular work shirts out to be laundered but these look great after coming out of the dryer.

DH takes his button down shirts to the cleaners even though I've offered to iron them in the past. It's like 99 cents a shirt, so it doesn't break the bank.

There is a dewrinkle cycle in our dryer. I buy wrinkle resistant shirts. We have a hand held steamer that we use when we must. We do 0 ironing haha!

I iron, I use the time to catch up on a few shows on Sunday morning while my husband and son are together.
My husband uses the wrinkle free shirts, but even though I take them straight out of the washing machine and hang to dry, they still need a pressing. Could he wear them without, sure, but I find the ritual calming. If I had to compare the time ironing a no wrinkle shirt versus a regular shirt, it's like 2 minutes versus at least 10 on the other ones. They take FOREVER and i have forbidden my husband to buy those unless he wants to send them out, which he doesn't.
