There seem to be a lot of us lately dealing with reflux and related issues so I thought we could all get together and commiserate!

We had our 2 month appointment today and the ped finally acknowledged that Zantac is definitely not working and switched him to Prilosec. He told me to call back in a week to update him. Haha, of course on our way out J threw up all over both of us and the floor and the dog tried to eat whatever was on the floor.

Oh my dog has eaten her share of baby puke! I'm glad you got a new med. I do not miss daily puke! Our reflux resolved aroun 14 months...

Ugh. I hope the new meds work for you! We are still on zantac. I'm not quite sure why the new ped did not switch fia to different meds to check. I think she thinks she maybe doesn't have reflux... but she just isn't sure. We're working the allergy angle right now. But you've read my posts about that

@spaniellove: Hope the change in meds helps!
We are down to Axid twice a day and it seems to be getting better at 6 months. He still has bad days but it seems as if we have good days more often than not! Our ped suggested that we not up his dosage and let him outgrow it a bit and see how he does.

@spaniellove: the prilosec is SO much better! You should see a whole new baby soon.

@Mae: Even though our ped completely believes me about the reflux and is very sympathetic, it took us a while to get to this point. He switched formulas at 3 weeks and it'll be 10 weeks tomorrow, so we've spent most of his life dealing with it all!
@BabyBoecksMom: Is Prilosec one of the meds that takes a couple weeks to kick in? I'm worried about stopping Zantac today, not that it was doing us much good.

Alice is on Zantac and is doing really well on it. Blake is on Prevacid and still spits up quite a bit, but it doesn't seem to cause him much pain (none of the screaming, back arching anymore, thank goodness). We've been using Enfamil AR to supplement and it has made a world of difference!
One ongoing issue we have is quantity to feed them. They breastfeed then we offer a bottle of formula. According to weighted feeds and pumping, they get 1 oz on left and .5 oz on right (with twins they each get one breast at each feeding and switch to he other side at next feed). We only offer 1.25 oz formula which doesn't seem like much but anymore usually results in screaming and spitting up. As a result we do more frequent smaller feedings. They eat about 10-12 times a day (at 3 mo) and it seems like soooo much. I want to stretch out the time between feedings but it doesn't seem like they can handle larger meals at this point. I'm constantly worried that they aren't getting enough to eat though and have stopped growing. They were still at 0% for Blake and 7% for Alice at last appt so I really don't want them to drop any lower on the curve!

@twodoghouse: gah that sounds so stressful, I'm sorry I wonder (and really do wonder bc I have no idea) if you could try giving them a little bit more at a time and build up slowly? Like you offer 1.25 now-- switch to 1.5 for a few days then 1.75 for a few days then up to 2? Like you know how when you have chinese food then you're starving 3 hrs later bc you stretched your stomach out? I wonder if it works like that for babies where if they ate a little bit more their stomach would stretch to accommodate? I'm not sure because Fia is the opposite. If we can get her to eat 5 times in a day I'm thrilllllled (even before the drama, she only wanted to eat 5 times/day). But then she really needs to take at least 5 oz/feed. That didn't used to be a problem but now it is obviously! She's eaten up to 6.5 oz before when she's in a groove, but right now it's hard to get her to eat more than 3-4 oz at a time.

@twodoghouse: That just sounds like so much work...not one but two! You are doing amazing keeping both of them fed. I hope they're growing again soon! Feel better A & B!
@Mae: The reflux can be so variable...at some point soon I bet she'll be eating more. It's so hard not to let the amounts stress you out! I think I live in fear at every single feeding that it's going to come back up as a fountain and end up all over my family room. How long have you been using the Zantac now?
papaya / 10343 posts
@spaniellove: Almost 2 weeks. But we still don't know for sure if it is reflux! The fear sucks though. Every day I wake up and wonder if today is the day my ever-changing bag of tricks stops working and I can't gt her to eat at all and I have to take her to the hospital for hydration. Bah. Today was not a good day... only 18oz before bed time. Sigh. (Going to try a dream feed at 11 and hope to get a few more oz in her though!) Fingers crossed we never get to that point where we can't get her to eat at all.

@twodoghouse: Dylan is still low percentile (19lbs at 19 months). We have always fortified his feeds. We made Enfamil AR (mixed with breast milk) 24 calories instead of 20. Dylan rarely ate more than 18 oz in a day and I was always stressed about it. But starting solids eventually made a huge difference. I think I was probably feeding every 2.5 during the day aroun that point and then 4 at night...

@Mrs Green Grass: We do the 24 cal/oz recipe as well. Which of course makes the AR even thicker which helps their spit up. I forget that even though they may take less ounces, they are getting more calories! I am eager to start solids - extra calories and I'm hoping thick purées will stay down better!
@spaniellove: @Mae: It's stressful but I know it could be so much worse! It's just the weight gain that worried me the most. I can't imagine dealing with your more severe feeding issues! We are lucky that so far they aren't picky about bottles vs breast or anything like that. They take after daddy and will eat anything we stick in their mouths, haha. I know they CAN go longer between feedings because they regularly go 5+ hours at night, but I think it's just habit to eat every 1.5 hrs during the day!

@twodoghouse: it took awhile for solids to really take off, but yes it's so much better!

@spaniellove: It seemed to take effect w/in 24 hours, but it took a week to get the full effect. It helped that she was already on the Zantac so the reflux was already under control.
