Is there any type of food made only in your region? I grew up in GA and can't think of anything that I can eat there and not anywhere else in the south. My husband grew up in Baton Rouge and when I met him he introduced me to all sorts of new stuff. Things like étouffée, beignets, po boys, boudin, crawfish, jambalaya, gumbo, and Cajun spices. I had never had any of it before then. I love Cajun food now! I've learned how make étouffée and am working on perfecting a jambalaya recipe so when tailgate season rolls around we can take a big pot to LSU games.

I grew up in Central PA, and that is the only place I know of that you can get fasnachts on Fat Tuesday. A fasnacht is kind of like a donut - the Central PA Dutch made them to use up all their lard, butter, and sugar before Lent. They are freakin delicious and every year on Fasnacht Day (Fat Tuesday), I crave being back in Central PA!
Now, living in Philly, I realize that you really can only get a TRUE Philly cheesesteak here in this city. Other places claim they make them, but there's no comparison. A real Philly cheesesteak cannot be duplicated.

@eiko2010: There are several places that sell cheesesteak here in TX. I don't like them at all. My husband has been to Philly and told me there is no comparison. I would love to try a real one!

I've been told we have some unique pairings of food in the midwest. Examples include: cinnamon rolls and chili or chicken noodles and mashed potatoes. Those things are pretty much always served together. Apparently we like our carbs!

@eeh: I agree! I never knew chili and cinnamon rolls together was considered "weird" until we had some friends over from the south! Haha that's how it was served to me in school and that is how I serve it at home!
My all time favorite regional treat are runzas! They are amazing and the definition of comfort food in my book!

I grew up in Northern Nevada and it's the only place I've ever seen Basque restaurants. Every restaurant sevres the same stuff, family style: french fries, string beans, spaghetti, salad, french bread, soup, and the entree of your choice. Plus, there's special little Basque dishes like oxtail soup, sweetbreads, lamb stew, beef tongue, chorizo, etc... Mmmmmm, Basque food...

In Western, NY where I went to college, garbage plates were a popular regional thing - and a reliable hangover cure - it usually involves some kind of meat like a hamburger or chicken tenders over pasta salad and fries smothered with a spicy hot sauce that includes ground beef.
In Central NY, where I grew up, spiedies are a popular regional thing - it's kind of like a kabob minus the veggies - cubes of meat marinated in "spiedie sauce" cooked on a skewer.

Texas...REAL MEXICAN FOOD! As in, you go to restaurants and no one is speaking English and the food is legit. Also, I live in far west Texas, and people eat notoriously horrible in this area--chicken fried steaks, cream gravy, tons of fried food. I didn't grow up here, but we never ate any of that growing up. I'm pretty close to NM too, so tons of green chile dishes! Blue Bell ice cream is also pretty regional to only Texas.

@lydg: Blue Bell ice cream is the best ice cream. It's definitely worth the price, but I don't buy it often. Nutty Chocolate is my favorite flavor. It's pretty hard to find though.

@leialou I agree...it is delish! I may or may not have eaten a pint of Pistachio Almond the other night. And I've never eaten that kind ever! They made a Groom's Cake the year I got married, and it was AMAZING! Chocolate ice cream with chocolate cake, strawberries and fudge ribbons...they need to bring it back!

I don't know if it's only in our region, but custard. Not ice cream, real custard. There really aren't any ice cream stand around here, only like DQ or McDonalds. You can really only buy custard around here. I'm not complaining though!!
