E has been potty trained for almost 8 months now. We've had a few bumps in the road but overall she's done pretty good. However, lately it is a BATTLE to get her to go to the potty. She always says she doesn't have to go even though she's doing the dance and then give it 10 minutes and she's running to the bathroom and sometimes doesn't make it (well makes it to my bathroom floor.) How do you get through to them that when it's time you need to go and not hold it? I've tried everything I can think of but it doesn't seem to be getting through to her.

Maybe she's testing her bladder to see how long she can hold it? You could take away whatever she is playing with for an hour when she pees the floor. We did that with E once, explained we don't pee on the floor, and she could have her toy back in an hour. I didn't want it to be ok that she peed the floor or find it fun that I had to clean up for her (she thinks cleaning is fun....)

Does she get upset when she has an accident? Or she's doesn't care?

@travellingbee: I'll check it out, she's not a huge Daniel Tiger fan (only kid I know who isn't!) but we do watch the little Disney Junior shorts with Nina who "doesn't wait to go" and she will say that when I say "what does Nina say."
@blackbird: I've tried the toy thing, it doesn't seem to matter to her. She doesn't have a "favorite" besides her blanket and I can't do that because it's her security and it would have a reverse effect I think.
@hilsy85: She usually starts to cry and say "I didn't make it" she's SUPER emotional these days. Whenever we discipline her she says "I'm a naughty/bad girl" and starts to cry, and I have NO clue where she gets this, because we never say that, it breaks my heart. I've asked daycare and they say they never say that but she says stuff there too. I ask her where she's heard that she says "Lily told me that" which is a girl at daycare who she doesn't get along with very well.

@LuLu Mom: Take this with a grain of salt since we don't have a potty trained almost 3 year old, but when she starts to dance, do you tell her it's time to go to the potty or ask? One piece of advice I got from someone else was not to ask, just take them. That seems to work better for us on some days, but not others.

@2PeasinaPod: I could be better about asking, usually I say "time to go potty" instead of saying "do you need to go potty" although knowing her she would say "no" hahaha but I'll give this a try.

Prob not a great solution but i do bribes. Not candy or treats but if she wants to go somewhere or do something, i say ok we can do that but we have to pee first. Like she says i want to paint and i say ok lets paint! But before we paint, lets go have a pee. Just trying to reason with her about peeing and why we should empty our bladders and not hold it in too long never works.

My LO went though a phase where she refused to go before naps/bed or before we left the house. We told her "you don't have to go potty, you just have to sit on the potty and try". And 99% of the time after sitting for less than a minute, she would go potty.
If your LO clearly needs to go, don't ask her a questions, say "Lets go sit on the potty now". That may be more effective than asking a question.

@LuLu Mom: as someone who's just gone through this, your LO will snap out of it! What worked for us was completely backing off on the reminders as for Miss A it was all about being control and she hated being reminded to go! I still do occasional reminders but I also leave her to clean herself up so she knows there's a consequence for her actions.
