How do you position LO when s/he sleeps? Zoey's head is looking pretty flat and i feel bad for a.) caring and b.) not being able to prevent it. She's only 4 months so I'm hoping it'll change as she learns to sit up. She will only sleep on her back and i haven't tried to change that since I'm more concerned about her breathing.

I turned my LO's head when she slept (rotated between left and right). She has a really pretty shaped head now.

I haven't really worried about it to be honest- early on I would let him take naps on his belly while I was watching him, but always sleeping on his back at night. I figure during his waking hours he is laying on his belly on me or having tummy time or sitting up while I hold him.
My pediatrician hasn't shown any concern when I've asked about head shape. He does have a noticable bump on the back right side of his head where he got a large bruise from birth, but she said he should grow out of most of it. Or at least start growing hair soon to cover it!
@miranlee: I hope her head shape works itself out, there is nothing wrong with worrying about it.

If your pediatrician isn't worried, then I wouldn't worry either. DS had a pretty flat head on one side for a while, around 2-4 months, but once he started sitting up more and was able to roll over while sleeping (around 4-5 months) it really evened out and now his head is pretty round. As soon as DS could roll over, he now sleeps on his side or on his tummy.

I've also been worried about my LO's head shape. He preferred his left side more. My pediatrician told us to put a rolled up blanket behind his head. She also did not show too much concern with it either. When my LO naps, I watch him as he sleeps in his belly and at night he's on his back.

@miranlee: I worried about this a lot. We did lots of tummy time. By 4 months, LJ was able to sit supported -- so we let her play in her jumper and in this piano toy we have for her.
That said, she's been STTN since 8 weeks -- so no matter how much I had her off her head during the day, it was still flat on the crib mattress for 10 hours at night.
We would re-position her head (left one night, right on the next) but by 5 months she was sleeping on her side.
It eventually evened itself out. She's 6.5 months now and has a nice, round head!

I was told to alternate sleeping positions, so i try to make sure she spends equal amount of time on her left side, right side and back,

Its such a gamble to move her head and risk waking her. I have been using the boppy noggin but she slides iff throughout the night and I'm nit cinvunced its doing much anyway. Sounds like it may even itself out...

It's so weird because when I was little, it was recommended that your baby sleep on his/her tummy or side. I remember putting all my little siblings to bed that way, and I know I was a tummy sleeper too.
I don't get why everything changed so quickly and now babies have to sleep on their backs--they get flat heads!! The SIDS rate has not even changed much since the early 90's....

I wouldn't mind putting Zoey on her tummy to sleep (i'm constantly checking on her and watching her on the moniter),, but as soon as we do, her little head pops up and she's wide awake, ready for tummy time. She came out with a strong little neck!

My niece had an issue with a very flat head and had to end up wearing a helmet to help "pop" it out when she was 4 months old. She has a very normal-shaped head now!
