When I reply to other bees on posts I always click "reply" by their name and then type out my message. Does it work the same way to type @ and then their screen name? I have went back to read through threads sometimes and see that someone has replied to me but I never got the notification. I am assuming if you just type out their name with an "@" before it, it won't notify the person via email? Just making sure I am understanding correctly, and if it's the cause of me not getting some notifications, but getting others.

Ooh, this is a good question. I've been guilty of just typing @ and someone's name in the text. I assumed it worked the same, but maybe not?

I've always wondered this, because if I am talking about you in another thread you haven't commented on (Bao's DD has blue eyes) etc, does it work if I put an @ before it?

@mrbee: as in the letters are case sensitive? What about adding the colon? Because next to your post it looks like MRBEE, but on here it's @mrbee, so all lowercase.

@MrsTiz: Nope, we don't send an alert to somebody unless they've already commented on the thread and someone is replying to them!
I forget why... I think someone was abusing it somehow. Or we were worried that somebody might abuse it and get us banned by an anti-spam service? Or maybe people were @replying to a ton of people, and our software can't send more than a few emails at once?
My memory is hazy on this one! But anyway yah, you can't page lots of random users on threads!

@Bao: Usernames display in all caps, but that's not how they're stored in the database.
The colon just tells the software that the username is done... that's how we can allow spaces in usernames. I think any punctuation will work, but I haven't tested it recently.
I don't remember if the usernames are case sensitive in the @reply feature. I always just click on the reply link?

@mrbee: I always just click the reply link too because it's just easier for me, but I think some others (even if I have already commented in the thread), reply but I don't seem to get it. My username is Bao but also is bao or BAO depending on where it is in the site, if that makes sense. So I was wondering if people reply @bao or @BAO but it should be @Bao, if that really made a difference or not.

I have seen when I go back and someone doesn't type it correctly I don't receive the email and miss it, and always feel bad. So now I be sure to do reply instead so that it doesn't happen to someone else

I haven't been getting emails today either!
I always hit reply unless I'm replying to someone on the previous page, then I try and type it out. I find it annoying that I can't reply to multiple people from a previous page.

@mrbee: the only flaw i see with the system is if the thread has multiple pages, and the person i'm replying to isn't on the last page (where the comment box is), there's no way for me to @reply to them... or is there?

@mrskc: Sorry about that! Couldn't figure out how to enable that cleanly, from a user interface perspective... if you have any ideas, all ears!

@HabesBabe: You can still click reply in that case, I believe... it should then send you to the comment box on the last page, with the @username text filled out!

Specifically on the Gold monthly update thread, I just went back to look at the newest posts and noticed 2 people replied to me and I did not get any emails. I did notice though, they replied to multiple people on the same post....could that be the cause?

Is there an opt out to get emails when someone replies to you? I want emails but I've never gotten them, have I opted out somehow?!

@mrbee: how about an option to see more posts per page? I know nothing about programming, so I don't know how complicated that would be, but it seems like a workaround to get the previous comments onto the same page!

@Bao: Yah we don't send out that many alerts, as one user could easily spam everyone in a whole thread that way.
I think something like 7 is our limit. Something around there.

@katiew92081: It took me a little bit to figure it out before too. It also took me a while to figure out you could reply to more than one person at once lol.

@LindsayInNYC: If you've gotten one alert but haven't visited the thread yet, we usually don't send you a second alert when someone posts to that same thread. That's just to limit the number of emails we send out, since sending a ton can get us blocked!
If you do visit the thread though, you should start getting alerts on it again!
