My husband's cousin gave birth in April to a 1lb, 15oz baby boy at 25 weeks. They are still in the NICU. Liam has been unable to come off the vent, despite multiple trials. And now he has pneumonia. He's being transferred from the small NICU where they've spent the past 10 weeks to a larger, better-equipped NICU. Please keep him, his parents, and his big sister in your prayers or send positive thoughts. My heart just aches for them.

My little brother was born at 24 weeks. He was 5 lbs 5.6 oz. He was in the NICU for nearly 6 months and there were numerous terrifying close calls. He was a fighter though, and now he is 16 years old and doing well! He has some vision issues from the ventilator, and some developmental issues, but he is a normal, functioning, 16-year-old boy in all other respects. This was also 16 years ago when technology wasn't what it is today.
So please know there is hope. I know how scary it is to see such a tiny, vulnerable little person but they are stronger than you think! Best of luck!

@Mrs. Jacks: I know. At work, I pump in my hospital's NICU, and I've gotten to know a lot of the mommies in there. Every time I mention that he's still on the vent and has failed multiple attempts to wean, they all have the same reaction. I know it's bad, and now with the pneumonia....really scary place to be.

@littlebug: well, I've had a couple kids who pulled through those kinds of situations, so you never know. (but never without significant lung problems).

My cousin had her twins at 24 weeks, Morgan did not survive but Andrew was 1lb 8oz at birth, spent almost 5 months in the NICU and at 20 months old is a big healthy boy, you would never know all he's been through.

Hi all. Please continue to pray for little Liam. They attempted another vent wean last week, and again he failed. His vent levels were very low, so they really thought he'd do well off the vent, but alas he desatted and had to be reintubated. They are now thinking there may be something wrong with his trachea. He was just transferred to the PICU at a larger (better-equipped) hospital, where is now sedated and restrained (he was frequently self-extubating). The PICU will try some other "tricks" for vent weaning, but if those fail they will meet with an ENT to discuss surgery!
Little Liam is certainly living up to his name - strong-willed warrior! Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers.

@littlebug: oh boy. If he's had multiple self extubations, he may indeed have some damage or scar tissue. I'm glad he's in a better equipped hospital. Hopefully that will help Liam get the care he needs.

Little Liam is getting a trach next week and will be going home on a vent within a couple months. Before going home, though, they will spend several weeks in rehab for family teaching. They hope that it will be reversible in a couple of years after all the damage to his trachea and lungs has healed. Ugh. Not the news we were hoping for, obviously. Thanks to all of you for your continued thoughts and prayers. This family has a rough road ahead...
