For LO's first birthday, we might be having it at a fancy-schmancy restaurant for brunch. Dress code is definitely chic...Not fancy, but no jeans. There are a couple of people on the guest list that I am genuinely afraid will show up in sweat pants and a hat. How do I word it on the invite that they need to freakin' take a shower and dress the heck up?

You can put "no jeans" on the invite or do you want to be more specific? "Casual dressy attire" maybe?

Can you send the message via word of mouth?
I.e., if they're cousins or something, could your mom spread the news? Or if they are friends, can you ask another mutual friend to mention it? -
@Rubies: i think "casual dressy" gets the message across. but as @lozza said, if they are your mom's friends then i would have your mom tell them directly. that is what i did for my wedding. i didn't want anyone showing up with a hawaiian shirt (wedding was in hawaii) and i had my mom tell her friends.

@Rubies: We had one of my baby showers & two of my bridal showers at a country club, so my mom & MIL just put "No denim please" or "Please no denim" lol I forget which. Good luck!!

Instead of saying something straightforward like "Dress code: Semi Formal" and sounding bossy, you could make it part of the description of the party. Like "Please wear your sunday best and join us for brunch at the famous restaurant __" Or "Please join us as we put on our sunday best and celebrate LO's birthday with brunch at the famous restaurant __"
Or better yet if the restaurant has a dress code, you can include that info like "Please note the restaurant has a no jeans policy" Or you can do a combination of the two which will really make people start thinking about dressing up.

@Rubies: Just tell them the location of the party and what the dress code is.
We're having our LO's birthday party at a place called Fogo de Chao.. kinda upscale, but doesn't require formal dress. I wanted to keep our guests comfy, so told them jeans are ok! -
I like @modern daisy's idea of incorporating it in the invite. Doesn't sound too bossy but gets the point across!

I think it's fine to say something on the invite! Especially because my father is the one who would come in shorts and a tshirt. So I understand the need to tell people.

"casual dressy" wouldn't give me a clue as to what to wear. I'd interpret that as jeans with a blazer, but I can see how others would translate that into golf shirt and sweatpants.

I am guilty of not dressing up any time I don't have to- so if I were receiving an invite, I would appreciate an idea of what the hostess would like.

i'm with the people above - just put it on the invite - i'd MUCH rather be told via invite than personally by you haha.
when i get invites, it always says "country club attire" or "business casual attire" or "business attire".... just add the please.
I need to make sure to take family pics and etc BEFORE I pig out. haha.
