My mom is retiring after working for over 40 years. I want to get her something amazing that she wouldn't get herself. Current ideas: diamond earrings, LV purse, David Yurman jewelry. Looking for very nice gift but nothing crazy like car or boat. Any other ideas?

LOL but seriously, I love the idea of a mother daughter trip! Does she live near you? What about classes for something she has always wanted to try? I'm thinking like something that can become a hobby/passion post retirement. I think that's the biggest fear of most retirees, that each day becomes the same and stagnant. So a hobby would be nice!

@regberadaisy: I know my gifts sound crazy but she's done soooo much for me that i want to celebrate her. She was a single mom and raised my brother for 9 years before marrying my dad. She is the most amazing person I've ever meet and she never does anything for herself.

But seriously m. My inlaws are retired and that's what I hear them say time and time again. Making a real effort to stay active and change up the daily routine. So they're not left wondering if today is Wednesday or Saturday. Anything that will help with that I think will be great for retirement. A trip sounds fun too but you can take her on one any time. -
Canyon Ranch spa long weekend or cruise. If you send her somewhere will you be her companion? I'd also create a tote bag full of goodies she would need on her trip and the diamond/ other previous stone earrings in there too!

Figure out a bucket list item of hers to help check off. Find out something she's always wanted to experience or see to celebrate her retirement!

Experience-wise, could you do a long weekend trip together? If you're in NoVa, the Inn at Little Washington is not too far and it's amaaaaazing. You could have a lovely celebratory weekend there and maybe also give a small keepsake, like a pretty piece of jewelry?

All of your ideas sound really nice to me, I'd welcome any of them and I don't think they're crazy at all. Life needs to be decorated, if you have the means, why not?

@BandDmommy: ahh, darn! Maybe another nice weekend place nearby? Or the Post Ranch Inn in CA is gorgeous. If you want to wait until after your LO comes, you could always give a gift now and plan a trip together for a bit later. That could actually be fun, to do all the planning together.
I will say that I do also like the idea of a class -- my mom is retired, and since retiring she's gotten super into yoga. I think she's taking like five or six classes a week. Doesn't have to be yoga, of course, but I think having some kind of fun routine like that when you're done with the boring routine of work is great!
