Britax's manual really sucked at explaining how to tether and their alternative options sounded absurd. It doesn't add any complicating factors to the seat and it's still very simple to get him in and out (and the option we were first considering definitely sounded like the 3 ring circus you described)

We don't tether our RF convertible - that's the advice that the professional installer people gave us when they installed our seats (same advice at multiple locations for my car, husband's car and MIL's car).

What kind of seat are you using? Like others have said our carseat only attached via the LATCH anchors when RF.

Ours is just seatbelt installed

Our car seat also only tethers when forward facing. We were actually confused when installing it because we thought it should, but apparently not.

Wow o had to look up images to understand what you were saying - that's ridiculous! I did see britax is/has phased that out - I don't know if that means old seats that used to require it no longer will require it but you might want to look it up.

We have our rf car seats tethered and it doesn't impede getting your kid in/out of the seat at all. Basically, there is a short strap/loop piece that loops around something on the floor (which is bolted to the base of your car) and the tether strap clips into that. We put our loop around the floor track that the front passenger seat is on. (The track where you slide the seat forward or backwards) From what I understand, it's safer to have it tethered while rf, because the seat can tip forward (against the back of the back seat) if it is only secured in the seatbelt/latch area and not tethered. I don't have a picture of this though. Also fwiw we have a britax boulevard and a diono radian - both tethered rear facing.

We have a Britax and started off using the RF tether like @lilbear's photo above. I hated it, so I bought the Britax anti-rebound bar. It doesn't get in the way at all - I recommend it if it is compatible with your model.

@Kemma: how do you get her in there??

@MamaG: I'm no help, because my seat doesn't allow rf tethering and I didn't even realize some did. I do remember reading other in countries it's much more common.

@Foodnerd81: @MamaG: the tether strap loosens off so it's not in the way and I can honestly say that the rf'ing tether has never been a problem for me!

It's worth noting that Australian seats usually have a stabilising bar and have the harness routed slightly differently and they perform differently in the event of a crash (eg straps come from ABOVE the shoulders when rf'ing

@MamaG: several of the new seats have a rebound bar which I think somewhat replaces the tether...I struggled so much with my Britax RF + tether that I switched to a Clek Foonf that has the rebound bar. I never could get her in there with all the belts and everything and it didn't seem as safe without the tether. For what it's worth, the seat that I have now sits so high up that she can see out and thus far she hasn't fought continuing the rear facing...she's 2 1/2 yo. Anyway, hope you figure something out - don't know why they made it so difficult on the Britax seats!
