@aprk: I'm thinking the same thing. I thought we'd have one in our room for baby to sleep in but now I don't plan on buying one.

I've seen this article before. I think that it all depends on how you use the R'n'P. Our LO slept in it, swaddled, for every night for her first 6 weeks. At that point we transitioned her to the crib. She still uses it during the day, occassionally to nap but more often to hang out in. For families that leave the baby in it constantly, flat head may occur. For families that only let the baby sleep in it until it outgrows the weight, there may be issues with adjusting to sleeping flat, but there are ways to wean a baby off of that, relatively painlessly.
For us, the R'n'P was a great tool, and still is. It allowed us to have the baby next to where we slept but not be co-bedding. We were confident in how we chose to use the R'n'P and it was a blessing to have.

I bought one so my new LO can sleep it it for supervised naps. I don't think I would be comfortable putting her in there for overnight sleep.

@autumnlove: I do think I'd be comfortable with naps but ill probably get the swing so our dog can't reach our lo.

I still think it's invaluable as a napper and a baby-holder while I'm in the shower.
L has his first cold and our pediatrician suggested keeping him at an incline as much as possible. He's been mapping in the RNP throughout the duration of his cold.
He never slept in it at night, though I do know at least one family whose child has slept in his RNP exclusively with no problems.

@ladybee: there are so many products for babies to hang out or nap in, and I'm just naturally suspect of any that is claimed to be so fantastic

We used it for over night sleep until she was three months old and about 12 pounds. We felt she was outgrowing it at that point. I think the limit is 25lbs which I can't imagine! But for us it was invaluable. M had terrible reflux until we got her allergies sorted out. Any time we tried to put her in the crib (even with mattress inclined) she would freak out and cry an end up puking all over herself.

There are many babies that cannot sleep flat because of reflux and the rock N play is fantastic! My lo sleeps in it every night for a totally of about 8 hours (supervised). I'm sure sleeping for 16 hours in a swing or rock n play can result in flat head (whih rarely requires a helmet...you can see it happening and correct long before it becomes extreme).
And regarding movement at night, if your baby is in a swaddle, movement is already restricted (although babies still develop some muscle by pushing against the swaddle).
I do think she poses some valid concerns especially re:the removable pads, but I found it really inflammatory and extreme.

I agree that this seems awfully extreme. Some concerns seem valid- like the pads that could move, but don't all babies have a higher risk of flat head because they sleep on their backs all te time anyway? I know several babies who slept in one for the first few months, and one who needed a helmet and developed torticullis. He has low muscle tone anyway so it's really unlikely it was due to the RnP. I know one other baby who had special pads made for sleeping bc she was developing flat head and torticullis and she never used the RnP.
I will probably still use one in the beginning, but this may make me more inclined to switch to a borrowed mini crib a little sooner (before moving to the nursery and real crib. )

You can also be careful about turning the baby's head slightly from one side to the other while they sleep, so they aren't always in the same position.
And, you can start tummy time (on you) in the first two weeks and then do tummy time on a mat after that.
