Does anyone have a round dining table with an insert to allow for more seating if needed? We want to replace our current rectangular dining table with a round one. While we only need 4 seats for everyday, we would like to be able to seat 8-10 for when we can have family/friends over again. Does such a table exist or is seating for 6 likely the most we can hope for with a round table?

We had a round table that was round for 4 but you could insert 1 or 2 leaves to make it seat more but then the shape turned into an oval.
We also had a drop side table that we kept the round sides down and then when we had extra people put the side up.

@gotkimchi: yes, that’s what we’re looking for (a round table that turns into an oval when leaves/inserts are added to seat additional people). Do you recall where your table was from?

@MLE81: it was old from my grandma. But when we were shopping for a new table steinhafels had them. I’m not sure if that’s a national store or not. But I think any large furniture store would have them

We have a 48” round table with 1 20” leaf. It seats 4 as a round table and 6 when extended, though you can squeeze an extra person or 2 in if needed. I see those dimensions a lot. PB has several, I know. So I think you’d probably want one that has more than 1 leaf if you want more than 6. Alternatively you could start with a 60” round but personally I think that’s too big for 4 people. I’ve had my eye out for a 54” round but they’re much harder to come by than 48” or 60”

My parents have a table like this that has 6 (I think) leaves so extends to about 120” total, but they purchased it from an antique auction when I was a kid. If you can’t find one in a store, I’d recommend calling around to local antique shops and auction houses to see if they have anything (once they’re open for business again).

We don’t have this particular table, but we like our other solid wood furniture from this brand. Our dining room table is round and seats 6 with two leaves that extend it so that it seats at least 10. It's made of tiger oak and it's an antique. Actually I'm giving it to my brother in order to get my grandmother's table that is similar but a little bigger and sturdier. We would regularly have 14/15 people around that table for every holiday meal. Maybe not comfortably all the time but we fit.
So not super helpful but I agree that antiques might be the way to go.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. We will definitely need to wait for stores to open again in order to check some out to see what we can find. DH isn’t keen on the “antique” route, but perhaps we can compromise with a custom made table or something from an independent/non-big box store.

@MLE81: when we bought our current dining room table I was looking for something very specific which was a refectory table where the leaves on the end slide in and out under the table and I found one on Craigslist for like $600 and we took it to a local guy to refinish it which cost $1200. So I got exactly what I was looking for for less then a store price so maybe keep something like that in mind
So not super helpful but I agree that antiques might be the way to go.
