As a S/O to Mr Bee's threads about the saddest tv episode and saddest songs, what is the saddest book you've ever read?
I just finished The Light Between Oceans and sobbed my eyes out. I mean, literally sobbing with red, puffy eyes and gasping for breath, it was awful. I just wanted to hold my toddler so close and never let her go.
What books have you read that have hit you to the core emotionally?

This is going to sound so silly, but I honestly think Marley and Me was the hardest I've cried over a book. I'm a tad obsessed with my dogs though, so it's a soft spot with me.

Also certain parts of The Deathly Hallows made me flat out ugly-cry. Even upon rereading, multiple times. Overall it's not a sad book though so I'm not sure it counts.

All my favorite books seem to be sad! Off the top of my head God of Small Things, The Stranger, and Time Travelers Wife had me crying a lot!

The Lovely Bones made me cry a lot. I can't imagine reading it now as a mother.

@lauraeabel: Agree! I couldn't finish that book. When the owner looks at his dog and sees his face turning white and realized the dog is getting old, is where I couldn't bear anymore of it!

@lauraeabel: Oh gosh, same exact books for me. I got major puffy eyes on the beach a few summers back over Marley and Me, and in Deathly Hallows when a certain house elf... well, you know... ugh, I'm actually getting a little teary thinking about it.
The Lost Dogs is also a major tearjerker.

I remember crying in public reading The Lovely Bones. Tess of the D'Ubervilles is heartbreaking but it's still my favorite.

I pretty much avoid all animal books, I see enough sad stuff at work, I try to keep most of my reading light and fluffy.

Number the stars was a tough read for me as a kid.
Lovely bones madee cry my eyes out as a college student. Don't think I could reread that as an adult/mom.

Where the Red Fern Grows, hands down. Also the end of Hunger Games (sob fest, but maybe because I was pregnant). I have The Fault in Our Stars downloaded on my kindle but I keep putting off reading it because I know it's going to be ugly.
