My Husband has to travel there in June for a couple of weeks for work. Hopefully his client, seeing as they have invited him over from the U.K. will be hospitable and take him out a little bit, but what are the must sees?
On a related note--I'd be totally insane to consider tagging along with a 8-9mth old, wouldn't I?

We went to San Diego for our babymoon a couple years ago and LOVED it! We stayed for 5 nights, so we did the zoo one day (you definitely need a whole day to make it worth it as it's pricey), we also went to Old Town a few times (it's a southwestern themed neighborhood with lots of good Mexican restaurants and shops to explore). We took a ferry to Coronado one day and stayed there for a few hours, though there wasn't a ton to do on the island like we originally thought. We also drove to La Jolla early one morning to check out the seals on the beach - you can get so close to them! It was an awesome trip, if you need hotel and restaurant suggestions, let me know 
And I think San Diego is totally baby-friendly! We will probably bring our LO in a few years when he can entertain himself on the plane.

@Mae: Yup, they have such a great zoo. It's a little expensive but it's a really good one. If you like zoos.
How long will he be there? If it's less than a week, that does seem like a loong trip from England to CA with a baby, but I'm a wimp.

@Foodnerd81: probably 10-11 days? I think the time difference issue would stress me out more than the flight! I don't know how infants deal with jet lag!

Sounds like @littlecasita1122 and I had the same trip, haha. We did all those same things and loved them! Of course the zoo is great (bring comfy shoes!) and DH and I weren't sure what to expect in Old Town but loved it more than we thought we would! Honestly we spent a lot of time laying by the pool of our hotel which was lovely, too!

I live in San Diego and have a few more to add to your list, all of which can be enjoyed with an 8-9 month old:
- Cabrillo National Monument (old lighthouse and currently operating military outpost with beautiful 360 degree views of San Diego and Mexico)
- Ocean Beach (hippy surfer beach town)
- Gaslamp (downtown neighborhood with shops, restaurants, and views of lots of San Diego architecture)
- Breweries (San Diego is famous for it's craft beer and there are many breweries to enjoy with great bar/restaurants: Stone Brewery, Ballast Point Brewery and Coronado Brewery are a few close to downtown)
- Food (so much great local food, from fish tacos to burgers and sandwiches and more)

Zoo, Safari Park, Coronado, La Jolla Cove, Beaches, Cabrillo Monument and tidepools which are below, Harbor Cruise, Gaslamp Qtr...
It's a fantastic place for kids, but it would definitely be a different sort of trip...I'm sure you could find sitters too (I could give some references).
