Just curious if any of you have either a balance bike or scooter for you 2.5-3 year old. Not sure which one might be good or if my daughter would prefer one of the other? Thanks!

We are wondering the same thing!!! The neighbors all seem to have both for their kids.

Balance bikes are a better investment I think. They have the added value of teaching your child balsnce so that they will be able to ride a bike earlier.

I have a balance bike for my 2.5 year old and he will not even try the thing out! We've had it for a year and I periodically reintroduce to no avail. Frustrating.

Depends on the kid's personality and if you live in an area where they will be able to really be able to experiment with the balance bike. My kids are way too cautious for the balance bike. There are a few balance bikes that have been passed around our neighborhood and none of the kids have taken to them. My vote is scooter!

@Lilysmama: My vote is scooter. (We have both). We originally got a radio flyer but the steering was poor. I found a used micro mini on eBay and it's so much better. I wasn't willing to pay full price but I understand why people love it. The bearings, wheels, steering is far superior.

We have both. The scooter isn't really used because it has the two wheels in front which doesn't let him steer. So it was a waste. We loved our balance bike and highly recommend them. We had a strider and at 3.5 years old we transitioned him to a pedal bike (no training wheels) and he took to it like a fish out of water. Since he is so tiny (the size of a 2 year old) it looks absolutely adorable.

we have both and the balance bike has been a much bigger hit, but it really depends on the kid!

We just bought a balance bike for LO as his 3 year old birthday gift, boy, that is a hit!!! It is a bit of a challenge to introduce it but once he gets a hang of it, it is heaven. We just went for a "stroll" in the park this morning, as in husband and I leisurely walk all around the park while LO rides his balance bike everywhere as we walk behind him. Everyone who walked by us thought LO was so cute. I vote for balance bike any day because you are teaching him a skill that for sure it will be useful for the rest of his life. (It is embarrassing to not know how to ride a bike, whereas it is OK to not know how to ride a scooter )
If you wonder how to introduce the balance bike, go to a grassy area where it has a bit of a slope. Tell him to sit on the bike and attempt to glide down the hill while not touching his feet on the ground. This way, the falling (if he falls that is, which doesn't really happen) is not as scary because it will be on grass. Husband also tried holding both sides of the handle and asked LO to raise his feet while running (pushing) very fast so LO gets a sense of how it feels like. Once he tried several times on grass (an hour or so?) then take a walk back to your car (or wherever) on concrete. He will then realize it is actually much easier to glide on concrete and he will get a hang of it. I also showed him youtube videos of how people ride on bikes to motivate him on trying. Today we ride in a park where there were a lot of people riding bicycles and he was very very inspired, he kept pointing at the cyclists and say look at those people!

I would say scooter. Get the Micro Maxi because it will last for years (up to 110lbs). We live in a city and have a scooter and a bike (with pedals), and the scooter is used much more often than the bike.
