My daughter was born at 34w5d and spent 10 days in the NICU. I took off work 16 weeks (that was the max amount of time I could take and still keep my job). She started at a home daycare which I thought was good but we ended up having so many problems out of them (that's another story), but she only got 1 cold within the two months she was there. She starts an actual daycare center Monday and I'm hoping she doesn't catch every germ possible.

She also received the synagis shot which I believe helped her tremendously.

She's been great though! I was really worried at first, but it hasn't been bad.

ETA: I think it's so much worse and more germy at daycares in the winter. I know there are germs year round, but I think more germs and illnesses get spread around during winter months.

My son was born at 34w4d and spent 10 days in the nicu- he went to daycare when he was about 16 wks old ( I was off for 12 wks and then my mom, dh and his mom traded off for another month). We have always been in big daycare centers and he had a cold when he was 5 mos but other than that was pretty healthy in the first year. Most of his illnesses were after he got mobile around 10/11 months and after that. His ped just recommended we restrict access and be really careful until shortly after his due date, he actually didn't seem to think that he'd have a compromised immune system in the long term. I think much if that depends on the baby's lung function at birth- if he didn't have any troubles breathing then he has healthy lung reserves to fall back on in times of sickness and its not as much of a concern I think. If he was on a ventilator or cpap, then would need to try to avoid daycare then.

We will have a nanny for the first two years, but my preemie is a 25-weeker...
