I remember going through that when LO was that age. This was when nursing to sleep no longer worked and i couldn't leave her room (with stupid creaky floors) without her going crazy.

Instead of holding her, i patted her through the crib slats and just sang to her until she calmed down. Then continued to pat her until she fell asleep. It took a while, but that was the only thing i could do that i was comfortable with.

I honestly can't remember when it ended because it was basically from the 12 month mark until recently (just over 2 years old) that we stayed in the room with her until she fell asleep. Sorry i don't have better advice/news for you! I only recently started leaving the room while she was awake.

Yup pat and sing is what goes on at our house too. Sometimes I even just sit on the floor and hold her hand through the crib slats.
