We are looking into using straight talk for our cell phones. It is $45 a month for unlimited everything and $30 for 1000 minutes, 1000 texts and 2 mgb data. From my understanding they use the same cell towers as at&t and Verizon. We don't use it yet though so I can't truly say how the service is.

@creativemomma15: I'd be interested to hear if it really does work!

@creativemomma15: they were a top pick in consumer reports! When our $200/month plan is up, I'm gonna look into switching. Do you know if you can have an iPhone?

@Mrs. Jacks: I wish we could find the strength to give up cable!!!! DH is too much of a sports freak so he has to have espn and whatever else...but our cable/Internet bill w/Comcast is $180 a month!!! We both hate it but are too spoiled with DVR/Hbo/etc:(. I commend you!!!!
I don't know how to cut the cord!!!

@mrs. bird: From what my husband has told me about it, you can have any phone with their plans. We were looking into getting iPhones as well but we need to wait a few months for our plans to be up. I am glad to hear they were a top pick!

Not to thread jack but if anyone has tips on how to keep up with coupons, I'd love to know! I am always getting good coupons (the ones they put in Swaddlers for diapers/Dreft/wipes, or the ones they give you at checkout at Target), and get all motivated to coupon- but then I forget them!!! And then they expire!
Omg. Reading this thread made me realize what an epic failure I am with money-saving. Between our extravagant cable bill and my unlimited minutes/text phone plan w/AT&T, I really suck!

@Bao: we have AT&T. I think our plan is 400 min, unlim data but no texting. I don't know if its still available. You should see if you are eligible for any discounts through your employer because I think that saves us a few dollars a month.
@PrincessBaby: I suck at couponing too! I think that's why I love Costco... The coupons are more manageable.

We buy what we can in bulk, and eating less meat saves money. We try to limit grocery shopping once a week but could never do less than that because we like fresh produce…and well, fresh veggies don’t last a month, they don’t usually last a week! If you can get creative with cooking, there are ways to save money there. Buy a whole chicken and cook it in a big pot of water and whatever veggie scraps you have on hand (we save our veggie scraps in a bag in the freezer). In about 3 hours, you’ll have lots of chicken stock and cooked meat. Strain out the stock and use for soups, risotto, etc. Save the meat and use for chicken salad, enchiladas, tacos, “pulled chicken” with BBQ sauce, etc.
@Bao, with Verizon – call them and change to the “share everything” plan. Our bill was $194/month for 2 phones with the exact plan you described and since switching to “share everything” it’s about $165/month.

We have managed to cut our cable/Internet bill with Time Warner by calling and threatening to switch to a competitor. We pay about $100 for whole house DVR, cable (no premium channels), and Road Runner (we also rent a router/modem from them). This is almost $80 less than what neighbors spend for similar services.
We also save a little money by maxing out a family plan for cell phones - we're on one with my mom, FIL and brother. It's cheaper to split unlimited texting and data 5 ways rather than 2 ways.
Another thing we just did was switch to a new credit card - American Express Blue preferred. There's a $75 yearly fee, but that is more than paid for as we get 6% cash back on groceries (our biggest expense) and 3% cash back on gas. We pay it off every month so interest rates aren't important to us.

@sunny: DH gets a 13% discount through AT&T or sprint I think but not Verizon, we still have a year on our contract to go before we can switch though, ugh!

@Mrs. Tricycle: we bought our own modem/router for our Internet instead of renting there's, and it was only $50 initially from Best Buy and that in the end really paid off!

@PrincessBaby: not threading jacking! This is a thread for anyone to chime in on anything money saving related! Someone mentioned something about a site that can help with the coupon thing, I'm on my phone right now so I can't get to things very well, but it's on the first page of this thread

@Bao: we had our own, too, but were having connection issues so we rent one so the repair people can't blame the problem on our router.

@sunny: Apparently we do get a discount through DH's work! It's only 8% for verizon, but its better than nothing We will switch plans after the contract is up and get 13 or 18% elsewhere.
