I'm thinking of making a couple of soups this weekend. A chicken stock based one and a broccoli and cheese. I'd love some other ideas, though. What's your go-to soup recipe?

I make vegetable soup with chicken stock, some red wine, a couple bags of frozen veggies, potatoes, onions, and garlic. If I have some fresh carrots and celery I add those too. I sauté them first in some of the wine. I season it with salt, pepper, and rosemary.

Oh, I'm late with this, but I made my favorite the other night: http://www.wnyc.org/shows/lopate/articles/web-extras/2012/oct/18/ina-gartens-winter-minestrone-garlic-bruschetta/
It's the Barefoot Contessa's, so you know it's good! A little fussy to make, but worth it. A few tips: you don't have to have pancetta, don't buy precut butternut squash (not as good texture/flavor), and don't add all the pasta at once. I would keep the pasta separate and then add just per serving. Otherwise, the pasta bloats up and the leftovers are more noodles than soup.

@Pelikila: I love that website. All of their recipes have been hits. Their white chili is great, as is their tortellini sausage soup.

I like Pioneer Woman's corn chowder...it might be cheesy corn chowder? It has hardly been cold here at all this winter, but if it were I'd go for it!

this hearty minestrone always goes over well when i make it. whole foods sells parm rind, that's the only grocery store i've seen it at that isn't like a cheese shop.

Oh man what I would give for a big fat bowl of baked potato soup! I wish I'd gone to get stuff for that last night but the grocery stores are going to be slammed with the storm coming...ugh! I just make a white sauce (roux) and add cheese, pieces of a few baked potatoes, bacon, green onion and lots of seasonings. Dill, seasoned salt and pepper are the most important
